Show TAX SUGAR FOR FOUR YEARS. Democratic Senators Favor Extension of Present Duty. Washington. Senate Democrats in caucus .Monday night voted to substitute substi-tute for the house resolution repealing repeal-ing the free sugar clause of the tariff act a resolution extending the present duty of a cent a pound until 1920. The vote on the substitute, which was recommended by Democratic Demo-cratic members of the finance committee, com-mittee, was 23 to 7. Senators Brousstird and Ransdell of Louisiana vigorously opposed the substitute, declaring that a four-year extension was no assurance to Louisiana Louis-iana sugargrowers and producers, and that it would fail to restore activity to the sugar industry in that state. Five other Democratic senators voted vot-ed with the Louisiana senators. |
