Show Father of Parcels Post Favors Government Telegraph Lines Now ' -y-.-' '.'--'5 f David J. Lewis, member of the House of Representatives from Maryland, has introduced a bill for the government ownership of telegraph tele-graph and telephone lines. He was the author 'of the bill for parcels post which now works successfully. This action was taken by the Maryland congressman following the announcement by Attorney-General McRsynolds that an an angement had been made by him and official 'of the American Telephone Company for it to give up its stock in the Western Union Company. The ownership own-ership of Western Union stock, by the telephone company was believed to be in violation of the Sherman act, but the attorney general and President Wilson undertook a peaceful peace-ful settlement in preference to a fight in the courts. The bill of Mr. Lewis is in line with the report of Postmaster-General Burleson, who advocates govern ment ownership of the wires. Des patches from Washington, however indicate that the President will noi indorse the recommendations of his cabinet officer. |
