Show PEACE MISSION PLANNED. Pontiff WIM Make An Appeal to the Warring Nations.' Rome. It was related here Saturday Satur-day that in conversations before his election Pope Benedict XV repeatedly expressed his belief in the necessity that the pontiff should intervene with an appeal for peace, not in a purely evangelical form, but in precise diplomatic diplo-matic action, "The pope," he is quoted as saying, "must actually place himself amidst the combatants instead of keeping away and preaching peace and concord con-cord from a distance." It is asserted that he expressed these ideas in the conclave with Genoese tenacity, but at the same time showing such absolute neutrality toward the -belligerents that it brought about his election as pontiff. |
