Previous to the time of opening the school on September 1'th, several of the leading citizens of this district announced that if the attendance i'i the Hiyh school was forty students for the first year they would feel very much encouraged. The attendance attend-ance at the end of the first week was thirty-nine students, and before a month had passed sixty students had registered. This enrollment was augmented aug-mented from week to week until the maximum attendance of eighty-seven students was reached. This enrollment, enroll-ment, according to Professor Hall, High school inspector, was the largest larg-est enrollment of any High school in the state at its beginning up to that tin e. The attendance at the High school surprised everyone for it went far beyond the expectations of the most optimistic citizens. It, however, told a story, a story that the people of this district were thoroughly converted convert-ed to the idea that a High school was necessary for this side of the valley. val-ley. Moreover it show ed that the people peo-ple were willing to support a High school and regard it as a great socializing so-cializing institution and an important factor to building up a greater community. com-munity. At first the High school was quartered quar-tered in the town hall, but the good people of the district hastened the erection of their new public school building and readMly found convenient quarters for their Hign school. Such a splendid record was made the first year that the High school board granted the request that three years' work should be offered in the Morcni High school for the school year of 1913-1914. The faculty was increased to five teachers, more room was secured and splendid departments depart-ments in Domestic Science and Art were established. The second year of the school's career ca-reer began September loth, 1913. The registration was excellent the first week, about fifty students registered. At the end of the first month -if school over seventy students were enrolled. en-rolled. From week to week the attendance at-tendance increased until now about 100 students have registered, not including in-cluding the special students taking Domestic Science. This is an increase in-crease of about 14 per cent over last 5'ear. This is a marked growth, because be-cause an increase of from 3 to 5 per cent in most schools is regarded as very satisfactory. This great increase in attendance again tells a story that the people loyally support their school and that they regard it as representing their highest .interests and aspirations. It - voices their desire for the full four year High school course for next yeaI"' FINANCIAL STATEMENT i The High school In this district is saving thousands of dollars for the people. Parents are now able to give their children a High school education educa-tion at less than one-fourth the coat of sending them to remote Bchools. At a very conservative estimate the Mo-roni Mo-roni high school saved for the people of this section last year about $20,000. ' This year the amount saved will go beyond these figures and will perhaps reach $25,000. Moreover, tne scaie aid to this High school waB over $1,200 last year. This year we expect ex-pect to receive from the state $1,500 to $1,800. All citizens are aware of the fact that a large amount of the state's tax revenue is used for educational purposes. pur-poses. Many of the other states of the Union spend vast sums for poor houseB, reform schools, prisons and the like. We are wise in spending much of the state's tax revenue for education. We want to teach our people correct habits hab-its of industry and correct habits of living. Intelligence is the glory of God; it is also the glory of man. All young people should incline toward learning and break away from the nothingness of the street and go ly school with a desire to advance themselves them-selves and better the world. THE AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL. The High school is the school -t the American people. It exists primarily pri-marily for the masses. It educates hundreds of youths who may never attend at-tend college, as well as offering studies required for admission to various vari-ous college courses. Every state is in some serious way devising a method and imbedding it in statute for providing pro-viding free High school education to all boys and girls. The High Bchool is to' reflect the : dally life and interests of our agri- . 1 cultural population. It muBt aim to i make better social adjustment, to ; make more scientific farmers than we now have. It must make the) occu-5 occu-5 pations of the country more repumer-u repumer-u atlve and the whole life in the open I country more beautiful and lnterest-I lnterest-I ing and freer from drudgery. I The action of a democratic people q can rise no higher than the public en-S en-S lightenment. Enlighten the public and enlightened action will inevitably P follow. Investigation, education and I legislation are the tribune of activities which will ensure universalized op portunity and socialized achievement. 1 A thinking population can be created I only through a good system of educa- , tion which reaches the masses. The slogan of our High school is that of service; I to develop in students the energy lo I work, the will to work and the intel- ligence to direct work most effective-I effective-I ly. We seek to develop the highest type of manhood and womanbord I which includes intelligent and pa-iriotic pa-iriotic citizenship. |
