Show Every Man For Himself That's whats seme of the cynics say about the citizens of Mb. Pleasant. They tell us that every man is looking out primarily for his own interests. No doubt that's true. And it ought to be. Self-preservation is the first law of nature. The egotistic egotis-tic urge is the strongest of all urges. It has been nature's dictate down through trie ages that the individual should protect his own rights, guard his own interests insure, in short, his personal salvation. sal-vation. Environment imposes that obligation. But above and beyond the natural na-tural law is a higher law. We call it altruism. It means, in essence, doing something for the other fellow fel-low as well as for oneself. It means being, as the Bible puts it, our brother's keeper. It is synom-incus synom-incus with a salient phase of Christianity. Is altruism a stranger in Moui.t Pleasant? We think not. We believe be-lieve there are plenty of people walking the local streets today who, while they are wise enough to "look out for themselves", in a decent way, are yet Christians e-nough e-nough not to forget the other fellow. fel-low. They have not altered the Golden Rule to read: "Do the other fellow as he would do you; enly do it first." |
