They are good peopl who know a good paper when they see one. Our good friend, Mrs. James wood, of 444 So. 4th East, died suddenly Monday afternoon at her home; leaving her husband and daughter Marjorie to mourn her loss She was a good, kindly disposed woman and was for years one of our near neighdort and a frequent visitor to the office. It was good to see the close companion-ship which she and her daugh-ter kept up for so many years. A real para-dise must come about through a change in the hearts of men. What we mean by paradise or heaven will have to be as much a state of mind and heart as it is a place. The great majority of human beings are living on life's lowest plane, that of the material, or the realm of things, to which they are in bondage. They are given over to hates and envyings and jealousies and greed, from which spring poverty and war and confusion. Those who live on a plane just above the material are slaves of the intellect and believe that reason and intelligence are the only good, and that all things and conditions must be squared to intellectual processes. Above the material and the mental planes is the spiritual plane and, for those who have really found it, there is peace and harmony and joy. In the spiritual realm, or plane, men are absorbed in "faith, vision, inspiration, intuition and divine law." It was into this realm that the Master sought to draw all men and, until we learn to reach up to this plane, any real paradise or Utopia is an impossibility. On that higher plane humanity may find peace and freedom, the new day and the new order. Political Items A fund of $50,000,000 is be-i- ng raised to defeat President Roosevelt. It. won't be as iasy to beat thaf sum as it is for movie millions to beat justice. It is said in the book One Man, that Wall street sent a carload of $100 bills to help nominate Wilkie in 1940. How much will it take this time? Notorious Gerald L.K.Smith is trying to nominate Lindberg for president. There is some-one on Rev. Smith's side but it is not the Lord. George Washington had only one Benedict Arnold. F. D. s several thousand. The impossible Peace Now people tell this story: Roose-- a velt and Churchill died and found their way to a place just outside the pearly gates. St. Peter was not there and they were locked. Churchill shook them until they rattled Kick 'em down, Winnie,'' said Roos-evelt, "I'll pay for 'em." t Chairman Roscoe Boden will I meet with his state committee to begin clinching the victory, which the Sagebrush club and the Jackson League have made sure and certain. So the Republicans just as well stay in bed on election day. It would be hard to imagine a more lively campaign than would be one between J. Reu-e- n Clark, Republican, and El-bert. D. Thomas, Democrat, for senator. In the days of dividing on party lines the Republicans were try-ing to win over a good Mormon brother down in Sanpete. The first time he went to their mee- - v ting tlie chairman called him by name and asked him to come up and say a few words of pray .er. He replied: "Mr. Chair- - man, please excuse me, I don't want theLord to know I m here. "Love the Lord thy God ... and thy neighbor as thyself. Do good to them that despite- - j fully use you. Overcome evil with good. By this shall men know that ye are my disciples that ye love one another. All whatsoever ye would that men should do to you do you even so to them " AFTER-THOUGH- T Ragged, dark lined clouds Bow down to greet the sullen Earth, Whose face, Scarred by ravages of wrath; Ripped, riddled Drenched by rain of human blood, Lies exhausted. COMMUNICATION TIME TO PROTEST Back in July, 1943, Progressive Opinion carried an editorial entitled, "THE BOYS WOULDN'T LIKE IT," written by a man with two sons in the service and two still to go. He said that he would like to say a good deal about the way our great Commander is being defamed and vilified in print and in talk here at home, but, like thousands of others, he did not dare to protest. The time has come now when every American citizen with red blood in his veins should vigorously protest when our Commander in Chief is vilified. Certain1 people have declared it an "open season" on the president of the United States. One of our great congressmen has challenged the president to make the soldier vote a campaign issue. Another has said that the president would contemptuously flip the constitution out of the window as he does the ash from his cigarette. Some columnists, commentators, and some newspapers do a wholesale business in half truths. The Mining and Con-tracting Review for January 31, 1944, says: "Again . . . resorts to half the truth (we prefer an out-and-o- ut liar) in his hand-out of January 10. . . ." And the Review expresses the senti-ments of every good American on this matter of "HALF TRUTHS." So it's up to us to be on guard. "THEY SHALL NOT PASS." Geo. E. Manwarine. If man is to enjoy fully the blessings of the New Age which is now dawning, he must seek, learn and practice TRUTH and come to the realization that nothing can be gained by warring upon his brothers, either in a military or economic manner; and that if he is to advance civilization, promote peace and happiness among all mankind, he must establish now earth an equal Brotherhood of Man. A New Hour on the Clock of the Ages has Struck! Now is the "accepted time" for man to discover and use his hidden abilities and powers by com-pletely developing all phases of his personality. Doubt, fear, worry, needless grief, fantastic and superstitious systems or plans of living are on the way out. WHAT ARE WE DOING TO BRIGHTEN OTHER LIVES? We have read of the man who gave one of his eyes to a boy in order that the youth might go on his way seeing. The man speaking of his good deed to a radio announcer said that in doing so he was reminded of the apostle who said, "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I unto thee." And when asked if there was a monthly consideration he answered somewhat as follows: "Nothing at all, but I have all the reward I want. I am old and he is young and I shall soon pass on knowing that when I am gone part of me will still be living, and with that part of me the boy whom I loved will go on his way seeing." That this boy might go on his way seeing, the man gave a very important part of the body God had given him. It was a great sacrifice but it was one of the best and greatest deeds recorded in the annals of humanity. How much is the average man doing in order that others may go on their way seeing? What are those blessed with wealth doing in order that their less, fortunate fellows may go on their way seeing? There are millions of youths just touching feet to for-bidden paths. Who will furnish the light to turn them back? There are. other millions of boys and girls, who, through poverty, have had the vision closed to their eyes. Who will seek to restore the vision? And there are millions of little children who never see beyond the sight of drab walls in their slum homes. Who will make real to them the vision of good, clean, comfortable modern homes? There are also millions of aged people for whom life's dreams have fallen away. Who will restore to them these dreams? To a generation of in-fidelity with 36,000,000 boys who have never been in church!, who will bring the light that is rooted in Calvary? Who wilt touch the eyes of the many rich men who,' like, have gathered and centralized all the people's money and cause them to see the way to deed justly and honestly and equitably with the less fortunate fellows ? Our business should be service to humanity to give light to them that walk and sit in darkness to be an eye to them so that they may go on their way seeing! MAY WE SPEAK FROM AN HONEST HEART? In this democracy it has become a fixed custom to viciously cartoon, hate, malign, betray, break down and even destroy political leaders; to divide and deceive the people; to stir up class hatred and to go the ways that are devilish. But and we say it from anhonest, humble and grieving heart it is not right for a church of Jpsus Chrt, through its daily organ, to lead in such campaign! nog tot a man set apart to be a special witness tor oeuus, to ion;e such campaign upon a faithful, trusting, honest people. To promote the true vision and idealism and brotherhood of the church we would go through fire and flood, and even endure the shame and persecution and mobocracy once hurled against it. But it deeply grieves and saddens us to witness what is broadcast to the people what is dividing them and shaking the faith of thousands. And we pray that a wiser policy will be followed. , ; I "Willing hands at work for war" Day and night they put through the calls that get war jobs done. They use the circuits to the limit. Alfred Sorenson Progressive Jeweler 75 East Second South j Jewelry, Watch. Kodak f Repairing Over 40 Years In SALT LAKjS CITY, J ' . - ' - CAUSES FOR THE FALL OF NATIONS On all the blood-staine- d pages of past and present history there is very plainly recorded one outstanding factor that has entered into and become the chief cause for the downfall of the nations that once were called great. It may be found in the following list of historical facts: When ancient Egypt, with all its magnificent glory, went down never to rise to anything like it had been, the land and wealth of the country were centered in the hands of 4 per cent of it's people. When the mighty Persian empire was wiped out of existence it was largely because 2 per cent of the people owned all the land and resources which should belong to the people. When ancient and mighty Babylon was the very queen of the world, 3 per cent of the people, constituting the ruling class, were the owners of all the real property of the kingdom. Time was when 2000 Roman citizens owned all the civi-lized world and made slaves of the people until the grandeur of Rome went out in night. Before the revolution a mere handful of men owned all the wealth of Russia. Before France's first revolution the king and clergy and the nobles owned three-fourt- of all the land and wealth. And before it fell in the present war 200 families were its owners and rulers. A handful of aristocrats and financiers practically own all England. A mass of evidence can be brought forth to prove that 60 families are the dominating factor in the control and ownership of America. Is it any wonder that nations and civilizations perish? The nation needs an economic bill of rights to stand beside its fine civil bill of rights. I 'Ire-- Pinom 3 ' 1 t - The Kingdom of God is the Kingdom of Love. Its center' is in your heart. Medical science tells us that at least three out of every ten drinkers become hopeless alcoholics yet here we are ration-ing food stuff, freezing prices of many commodities, and as one man said, "We can do anything in the wide world, under the star spangled dome of heaven to win this war. But if you touch liquor you are just a wall-eye- d, crepe-hangin- g fanatic." Yes, we are at war. Every newspaper, every poster, every radio, every civilian defense speaker, emphasizes the need of man-pow- and money to win the war; yet at the same time we are permitting a sheer waste of 5 billions of dollars spent yearly for liquor, that slows down production, causes absenteeism, and makes soldiers unfit to win the war.
