Show Navajo Youths in CCC Repair Ruins of Pueblo GALLUP, N. M. A group of Navajo Nav-ajo CCC enrollees, whose ancestors were traditional enemies of the Pueblo Indians, are patching up the ruins of Pueblo Bonito, famous pre-' pre-' historic apartment house of their ancient rivals. The preservation work under supervision su-pervision of national park service archeologists, consists of drainage, capping and supporting the walls of the pueblo, which was constructed more than 1,000 years ago. The Navajo unit, unique in CCC organization, is composed of 20 youths who live in family groups in the same manner as on the reservation. reserva-tion. The boys have done a great deal of preservation work, but this is perhaps per-haps their biggest assignment. Part of Pueblo Bonito, in the Chaco Canyon Can-yon national monument, is five stories sto-ries and is estimated to have housed as many as 1,200 persons. A model recently was installed in the Brooklyn, N. Y., museum, showing show-ing the building and the surrounding surround-ing village as it is believed to have appeared 10 centuries ago. |
