Show If one great army had control of the great coal fields of Carbon county, nnd another were attempting at-tempting to wrest them from it, the fighting would be similar to the fighting around Lens in France. The Germans by holding Lens and Its environs, have a stranglehold on the great productive pro-ductive coal and iron mines of Northern France. Capturing the city from the Germans is more than merely pushing back the Hindcnburg line. The terrific defense put up by Hindenburg (around Lens indicates thnt the Teutons nrc fully nwnro of the vnlue of these mine fields. Those locally who Tollow the developments of the war closely remember that Lens was reported nearly ready to fall some weeks ago, when the Germans came to the rescue with vast reserves and have held the city and the mines. Capture of Lens would mean more to the allies than the destruction destruc-tion of a hundred submarines. We believe the city will eventually be taken by the allies, but it is evident that it isn't toppling so easily as at first anticipated. By comparing Lens with Utah's great coal producing center, local war critics may grasp the significance of the fighting fight-ing in this vicinity. |
