Show , EIGHTDOLLAR COAL FOR THE I j WINTER NOW THE PREDICTION BJ Two of Carbon County's Biggest Concerns ' Balk On Public Willies Insurance ' Rates As Prohibitive. HH Utah coal operators nrc preparing to advance the wholesale BBB price of coal fifty cents a ton within a few days, and an a forerun- n , "cr to the advanco for Salt Lake City and other Utah points the Uj companies have advanced the rate to four dollars a ton for Idaho, m , , Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington shipments. At the kB present time coal may be bought at the mines for Utah delivery BBB for three dollars a ton. Retail dealers at Salt Lake City and the BBB sales agencies of the coal mining companies declare they do not BBB know to what prico coal will go before next winter. It is predicted B by John S. Critchlow, general manager of the Utah Coal Sales BBB ngency, that coal in Salt Laku City may go to eight dollars a ton BBB , retail before the coming winter is over. At the same time it was H announced by the leading retail dealers that they arc more than BBB eighteen thousand tons of coal short for local deliveries at this H time and that as yet not a pound of coal has been placed in stor- BBB nge. II. G. Williams of the Utah Fuel company says that his cotn- BBB pany has not considered an advance at this time and that a decl- H rion to raise the price would have to come from Denver, Colo. m With the last increase of fl'ty cents a ton by the mine opera- BBB tors in the Utah fields the retailers increased the retail price fifty B .cents a ton. Coal which was selling for $5.75 a ton retail a month B i ago is now retailing for .$(5.25 a ton. With the increase of fifty B I cents a ton more to be made early this month Salt Lake City re- B j tailors announce they will be compelled to advance the price of BBB coal to the new level of $0.7f a ton. At the price of $0.25 a ton B retail dealers are flooded with orders which they cannot fill. In BBB ? Idaho and other states which are served by the Utah mines the B .. -i dealers have advanced their prices to meet the new coal rates B which are In effect throughout those states. The Standard Coal B company has not as yet made an advance to four dollars, so far as B their circulars are concerned in Idaho, but the price of four dot- B lars is being put In force In Nevada. B " Coal companies on the Pacific Coast are making an unprcce- ' dented demand on the Utah mines for a great surplus of coal dur- B I tng the coming vear, and higher prices arc being offered there in H order that the distributors of the Pacific Coast may be in a posi- BBJ. tlon to fill all of the contracts which they have made with the 1 shipping interests and with the government posts. The Idaho B dealers are asked for coal at any price, and in order to care for T . their needs and the needs in this state the price was advanced ' fifty cents a ton to outside poiiUs In order that the additional cx- H ,enses of mining might be met. Hj John S. Critchlow said last Saturday that the United State 1 "Fuel company will take tin the matter of the advance of fltfy cents Hjt I u ton to Utah points within a few days. He asserted that the com- H t I panics could not sell coal at three dollais a ton In Utah and charge H i lour dollars a ton in Idaho and other states 'The increase of Hl"1 )j fifty cents a ton in Utah will be the natural .sequence of the in- Br '. it1 crease of the price in Idaho," said Critchlow. "It Is not rcaHonablo H M to suppose that Utah will get coal at three dollars when a market Hl j, I for four dollar coal exists. The price of coal is going to seven dol- j cr I ars a' ton retail in Salt Ijtke City lxifore the winter, and it may go W U to eight dollars. What the prices will be no man can tell." BBJ. 1 1 He has issued a circular to all of tho dealers In the intcrmoun- m ' ff j tain country and on the Pacific Coast urging that the supply of BJ W roal in the Western country be consowed.
