Steel's Geneva Works, has started going on stream. First of its kind in a major steel mill in trt9 United States, the new plant uses coke oven gas from the big Columbia - Geneva Steel Division installation to produce anhydrous ammonia which is stored in the two big Hortonspheres (left center). Some of the anhydrous ammonia is further refined into ammonium nitrate. This high strength fertilizer is produced into solid form as prills in the tall 13 story prilling tower (center). Ammonium sulfate, a third member of the USS fertilizer family, is produced in granular gran-ular form in another part of Geneva's chemical plant. US Steel Plans Meetings with Dealers to Hear About New USS Products Brand of Fertilizer More than 200 fertilizer dealers in Utah are scheduled to meet with key officials of United States Steel Ccal Chemical Sales Division in special meetings on Mcnday and Tuesday. In two separate meeting's, one in Brig-ham City and the other in Provo, dealers are scheduled to hear about U. S. Steel's new USS Nitrogen Products brand of fertilizers, fertil-izers, a line of throe high-strength - fertilizers which has start ?d flow ing frcm Utah's newest industrial plant, the nitrogen products plant at U. S. Steel's Geneva Works which started on stream recently. The new plant at Geneva, first of its kind in a major steel plant in the United Statts, utilizes coke oven gas produced at the big steel mill where coke i3 manufactured for use in the blast furnace there. Hydrogen from the coke oven gas and nitorgen from the air are mixed in the plant to produce anhydrous an-hydrous ammonia. Part of the anhydrous an-hydrous ammonia produced at the plant is slated for shipment to Utah farmers and other western users; the remainder of the 70,-000 70,-000 tons-a-year production will go into ammonium nitrate. A third member of the USS 'Nitrogen. Products Pro-ducts line is ammonium sulfate. Ammonium sulfate has been produced pro-duced for many years at Geneva, but a new ci-ystallization plant has been added to the production line, improving the quality of tins product. pro-duct. A team of U.S. Steel sales specialists spec-ialists and agronomists will be in Utah all next week working with dealers and answering questions about the new products. "We're very happy that we will have our complete line of nitro gen products available to Utah farmers for the 1957 growing season," sea-son," said Frank E. Adams, USS coal chemical western sales manager. man-ager. Mr. Adams explained that the USS anhydrous ammonia would be shipped in tank cars in the same manner as it is handled already for use in regular farm implements throughout the area. Farmers apply ap-ply it direct as a liquid underground under-ground where it becomes a gas and clings to the particles of soil, Mr. Adams explained. Ammonium nitrate is granulated in shot size and will be shipped in 80-lb. bags for convenient handling. "And now that we have our new equipment operating in the sulfate sul-fate plant at Geneva, we're very proud to have a superior brand of that product to offer in 80-lb. bags," Mr. Adams concluded. |
