Shoell, 92 years old on March 5, spent the day quietly at the home of his son Clem in Lindon, perhaps remembering that he crossed the plains in a covered wagon, shook the hand of Brigham Young as a youngster, and recalling the mud wall around Pleasant Grove, which was built to keep the Indians from the settlement. set-tlement. Mr. Shoell, who has been a successful suc-cessful farmer, and lover of fine horses, came with his parents, Edwin and Mary Hunt Shoell, converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from England. He was born March 5, 1860, at Cranham Glo, and left London on May 5, 1866, for the long journey to Utah Territory with his parents and one sister. The family came on the Sail Ship Caroline with 389 converts under the direction of the Captaincy Capt-aincy of Samuel H. Hill. They arrived ar-rived in New York on June 11, 1866, being on the ocean 36 days. From New York the family journeyed jour-neyed by rail and boat to Wyoming, Wyom-ing, Nebraska, arriving at that Mormon gathering place on June 24. On July 13 the Shoells left the Nebraska post by ox team in the Henry Chipman Company. On the trip over the plaii s the Indians killed over 100 head of cattle be-loning be-loning to the company. They arrived ar-rived in Salt Lake Valley on Sept. 5, 1866, later coming to Pleasant Grove. He married Elizabeth Hooper on Oct. 20, 1881. Four sons and two daughters were born to this couple. His wife died Aug. 10, 1910. On April 11, 1912, he married mar-ried Eliza Gilbert Stagg in Salt Lake City. She died on March 10, 1935. Mr. Shoell's education was limited lim-ited to five days in school, but he learned to read and write by his own efforts. Mr. Shoell has three sons and one daughter living: Albert Shoell, Nuns, Provo Canyon; Clarence and Clem Shoell, Lindon; and Mrs. Violet Brown, Provo. Another son, George H. Shoell, Orem, died last April. He also has 23 grandchildren grandchild-ren and 39 great-grand children. |
