Show Second Defeats Manila In Fast Ball Game Fans on hand were treated to three thrilling tames Wednesday evening in the second round of the unpredictable Stake M Men League, as the Second Ward. First Ward, and Windsor won their games. Coach Eldon Johnson's determined determin-ed Second Ward team refused to give and came from behind in a 4th quarter spurt to overcome a 3 point handicap and beat out last-year's last-year's champs 28-29. They emerged from the second round of play as the only undefeated team. Manila, ahead 23-20 at the end of Cie third quarter, seemed to be in a position to win the close contest, con-test, However, at this point, Matthews Matt-hews finally found the hoop and with the help of D. Walker and Hall, his team went ahead 29-24 with one minute to play remaining. Trying desperately to save the game Manila closed the gap to 28-29 28-29 on baskets by Carter and Boyd Swenson as the final whistle blew. Matthews after missing repeated shots in the first half, finally found the range in the colsing period to score 7 points for his team. Hall and L. Walker with 6 points each; D. Walker with 5. Keetch 3 and Boren 2. accounted for the Second Ward score. For Manila, Boyd Swenson baged 6 foul pitehes in 8 trys together to-gether with 4 field goals to take scoring honors with 14 points. His brother Bernard, scored 8 points, and Carter who had an off night on the scoring, was able to connect for 4 points. Lee Swenson and Monson each contributed a foul toss to round out the scoring. In the First Ward-Third ward game Coach Cliff Harper's First Ward aggregation trailed at the Tirst quarter and half way marks, finally tied up the game 18 all at the end of the 3rd quarter, and with a last minute basket barrage, won v their game 29-23. The First Ward score was obtained as follows Giles 13, Boyd Harper, 5, Loader 4, Max Harper 4, Charles Harper 2. and Ash 1. For the 3rd ward, Eugene Harvey garnered 11; J. H. Harvey 8; Hilton and Keetch each 2. In the final fray, Windsor finally bested Lindon 29-25 in a nip and tuck battle which saw each team alternating baskets up until the final few minutes when Gillman Bros, and Company began to get hot. The Windsor Ward scoring was pretty evenly distributed with Dean Gillman making 8; G. Gillman 6; Swenson 6; Holey 5; H. Gillman 3. and Harper 1. For Lindon Garth Walker took high scoring honors with 10 points; followed by Houtz with 6. Harris 4; L. Walker 3, and Miller 2. Next Thursday's schedule pits the 1st Ward against. Windsor at 7 P .M. Lindon vs Manila 8, and 3rd vs 2nd at 9. If the other ward members would support their teams as faithfully faith-fully as does Manila and the 2nd. these very close contests would be even more thrilling. SUNDAY EVENING SERVICES Sunday evening Church servcies in the Manila Ward will be in charge of Counsellor Alex Wad-ley Wad-ley and will feature a report of each auxiliary orzanization, given by one of the organizations counselors. |
