Hardwoods is a term applied ap-plied to trees that drop their leaves in the fall, while the term softwood applies to trees that hold their leaves throughout the year. Where hardwoods can be grown, they are more easily raised than softwoods. Only three species of softwoods soft-woods will be available this year. They are eastern Red Cedar, valuable val-uable for windbreaks and shel-terbelts; shel-terbelts; Ponderosa Pine, valuable valu-able for sawtimber production; and Blue Spruce, a hardy tree profitable for windbreak and shelterbelt purposes. In hardwoods, the following Forestry Lists 150,000 Trees For Farms One hundred fifty thousand trees are available at the school of forestry nursery, Utah State Agricultural College, states Professor Pro-fessor J. Whitney Floyd, extension exten-sion forester. These trees must be planted on farm land in Utah for woodlot, windbreak or shelterbelt shel-terbelt purposes only. A price list of varieties is now available from the school of forestry, and may be obtained at any time. Farmers are urged by Extensionist Floyd to secure trees by placing early orders, so that trees may be "tailored" without delay this spring. Information given out by the forestry school states that trees should be planted wherever space is not being utilized, and where-cver where-cver irrigation is possible. They should also be planted in pastures pas-tures to provide shade for livestock; live-stock; along streams to prevent erosion; and near unprotected buildings, fields, and orchards, to reduce wind damage and moisture evaporation.
