Show Mayor S. Duane Harper Outlined Projects For Community Development The widening of Main Street; the extending of Main Street for one block North of the Bank; a good street lighting system for Main Street; a Sewer System for the city; and a new water storage tank were among the projects outlined for the future development develop-ment of Pleasant Grove, Wednesday Wednes-day evening by Mayor S. Duane Harper to the members of the Pleasant Grove Lions Club. The Mayor and City Council and their wives were guests at the club's luncheon meeting held at the First Ward amusement hall. The City and State Road commission com-mission have already come to a satisfactory agreement concerning tne widening of Main Street and this work wil be commenced as soon as weather, conditions will permit. The street will be widened from the bank corner to the intersection in-tersection of the Gneva Steel road and Highway 91, making a fine rpproach to the city and eliminating eliminat-ing the bottleneck as it now is. Mayor Harper reported that the city is in a very good condition, financiallly, and was in a position to consider any worthy projects that the citiens of the community wanted, however such improvements improve-ments as the sewer system would have to wait until such time as materials and matpower would be available. The city is already waiting wait-ing the g'o ahead sign on the water storage tank, the Mayor said, and it will be completed this spring. Mayor Harper discussed the city's recreational program, which included the summer softball and recreational program and the ice skating rink for the winter recreation. re-creation. We are attempting to get the entire city cemetery planted into lawn which will make it more beautiful and cheapaer to maintain, main-tain, said the Mayor. A project we are planning at the cemetery is a tool house and rest rooms. In looking into the future development de-velopment of Pleasant Grove the-Mayor the-Mayor anticipates- that there will be a number of fine homes constructed con-structed here for the permanent employees of the steel plant and for the housing of employees of other plants that follows the steel industry. He especially mentioned that in his opinion there will be new homes constructed along the east bench land, where larger tracts of land are available. Mayor Harper also reported that he had attended a meeting Wednesday Wed-nesday afternoon in Provo when a 1 sport was made by the Utah Co. Committee who recently returned from the Carson City, Nevada, hearing on the Geneva Steel plant, andthe committee reported that Senator Pat McCarrin of Nevada had assured them that the structural struct-ural steel part of the Geneva Plant will he completed and operated oper-ated for the duration. Jos. F. Shane an employee of Geneva Steel Co. who is a newcomer new-comer in this area, and a man who had experience as a city Councilman in a small city in Illinois Illi-nois spoke briefly on his version ofsr developments that generally comes with an influx of people, such as we have witnessed here. The matter of city beautifieat-ion beautifieat-ion was discussed briefly by Mel-1 Mel-1 bourne Wallace and Merrill War-nick War-nick advocated the organization of a county wide affiliation of civic clubs to handle affairs of the county, especially i'l promot- ing industrial develooment, which will be needed and which will come to this county if proper efforts are put forth. A very fine musical program was presented by a male chorus under the direction of Irwin Jensen. Jen-sen. President Rulon Brimhall presided presi-ded and welcomed the city council to the meeting. |
