Show Cattle Disease May Cause Animal Deaths A cattle disease which ranchers may easily mistake for blackleg is causing many deaths in cattle heards this season, according tc a report" received here today from the American Foundation for Animal Health. "The disease, known as 'mal-ignat 'mal-ignat edema', causes symptoms similar to bleckleg, including quick death, fever, gas under the skin, and lameness," the report states. "About the only difference differ-ence is that cattle of all ages may die from malignant edema, while blackleg is rarely seen in animals over 2 years old. Malignant Mal-ignant edema also kills many horses suffering from puncture wounds, the sheep after docking or shearing." The Foundation report declares de-clares that similarity of symptoms symp-toms between the two diseases often leads ranchers to believe that blackleg vaccines have failed fail-ed to hold. "Re-vaccination with ordinary blackleg vaccines will not stop losses due to malignant edema," the report says. Where-ever Where-ever doubt exists as to the cause 1 of blackleg-like deaths, a veterinarian veteri-narian should make a thorough diagnois, so the true cause of the trouble may be determined, and proper steps taken to save the animals." |
