Show War Crops Are Increased For Next Year Barley and corn have been approved ap-proved for Utah by the secretary oi agriculture as "war crops" and may be substituted for wheat in 1943 acreage plantings without loss of payments or reduction o'f allotments, allot-ments, according to W. R. Holman, chairman of the Utah county AAA committee. In addition to these two crops, winch will be grown for feed, Utah county farmers may also divert their wheat acreage to dry beans, dry peas or sugar beets, which have been set up as "war crops" by the U. S. department of agriculture, Mr. Holman explained. Barley and com have been approved by Secretary Secre-tary Wickard as "war crops" for Utah because they will produce as much or more feed in most instances in-stances than wheat, he declared. Mr. Holman said the farmers may select any of these crops which can be grown satisfactorily and substitute such crops acre for acre for wheat in earnnig 1943 AAA payments. The 1943 AAA program as now shaping up, he pointed out, will require farmers to seed at least 90 per cent of their wheat acreage allotment either to wheat or the designated "war crops" in order to be in full compliance. Purpose of this requirement is to secure full wartime production from all available crop land. This year's bumper wheat crop, plus carryover, has resulted in a two-year supply which taxes the storage and transportation facilities. It is most important, Mr. Holman declared, that wheat growers divert just as much wheat acreage as , possible to these other crops which are greatly needed in the war program. |
