Show Inflation Coming After War Says Carpenter Real inflation will probably come after the end o'f the war when government controls are relaxed, G. Alvin Carpenter, economist for the Utah State Agricultural college Extension Ex-tension Service predicted recently at the annual conference of home demonstrators of Utah. "Only maintenance of price controls con-trols can prevent a major price inflation in-flation similar to that of 1919 and 1920. The rationing o'f certain consumer con-sumer goods may have to be retained retain-ed until stocks begin to approach total effective consumer demand," Economist Carpenter explained. Discussing rationing, the exten-sionist exten-sionist declared that rationing of meat is likely before January 1, and the rationing of certain dairy products pro-ducts and canned vegetables is expected ex-pected to follow shortly after. "Paying off indebtedness is one of the soundest uses of money during dur-ing the present inflationary period," Mr. Carpenter said. "If you are in debt, see to it that you reduce that indebtedness as quickly as possible." "Dollars spent for payment of debts during a period o'f inflation will bring you greater value than dollars spent for purchasing goods, because prices of goods have increased increas-ed whereas the amount of the original origi-nal debt remains the same in terms of dollar and cents." The economists talk was one ol the highlights of the meeting of the home demonstrators at Extensior Service offices in Logan. Home demonstration agents of Utah anc state specialists of the Extensior Service participated in the conference confer-ence that emphasized "The Home Demonstration Program in Wartime." War-time." - |
