Show Passenger Record Set By Rio Grande A new all time record in the number of passengers carried was established by the Rio Grande Railroad in 1945, and this was a contributing factor in sending gross revenues to a new peak, the annual report of the railroad, released Monday, reveals. re-veals. In all, 1,599,000 persons rode Rio Grande trains a total distance dis-tance of 662,222,000 miles, or the equivalent of 26 million trips around the world at the equator, and these passengers paid approximately ap-proximately one and one-half cents for each mile they traveled. One passenger lost his life in a train accident during the year, the first fatal passenger accident on the Rio Grande in nearly 20 years, and this was the result of a falling rock rather than a "wreck." Other facts revealed by the report show that the 10,000 Rio Grande employes were paid $31,-000,000 $31,-000,000 in wages, bringing operating operat-ing expenses up to an all-time high. In addition, $4,600,000 was expended in improvements to the road and equipment in 1945. |
