Show Boy Drowned InMill Pond George Edward "Teddy" Turner, eleven-year-old son of Mr., and Mrs. Alfred Turner of Lehi was drowned in the Mill Pond near the Lehi Sugar factory Tuesday night about 7 o'clock p. m. when he became frightened and jumped from a boat in an effort to swim to shore. Teddy and a playmate, John Hansen, Han-sen, 10 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hansen of Lehi, were fishing in the Mill Pond from the railroad crossing, when they decided to get in one of the boats that was tied near" there. A wind came up and the boat drifted and began to rock. The boys tried to paddle the boat to shore, but were unable to make much headway. They became frightened and Teddy, who was a real good swimmer, jumped from the boat in an attempt to swim to shore but became overpowered by the water and sank. He jumped in with all of his clothing on and evidently evi-dently the distance to safety was farther than it had appeared to the boy. The Hansen boy stood up in the boat, screamed and waved his arms and drew the attention 'of Walter Hunter of American Fork, who was 'fishing on the Northeast corner of the pond. Mr. Hunter ran quickly to the scene. He waded out into the water and rescued the Hansen boy in the boat and attempted to reach the Turner boy, but failed to find any trace of him. Help was called. American Fork City Marshal Albert Blrk and Lehi City Marshal Niron Fowler were summoned to the scene. Marshal Birk with his son, and son-in-law, attempted to reach the body in a motorboat but were unsuccessful. The city marshals rounded up a crew of men, drag hooks and a drag net and conducted the search of the pond. The body was found three hours after the boy went down, about 25 yards from shore at 10 o'clock p. m. It was brought up by a drag net, operated by Levi Carpenter Car-penter and George Madsen. Sheriff E. G. Durnell, who was called from Provo, bringing drag hooks with him, assisted in the search. Sheriff Durnell and Deputy Depu-ty John S. Evans assisted the city marshals in the investigation. Teddy had been herding sheep with his father near the Mill Pond. John Hansen came down for his cows and the two boys decided to fish in the pond. Mr. Turner was in the fields nearby herding the sheep and had just called to the boys a few minutes before, asking if they were all right and telling them to be careful. He had just gone back to his sheep when the tragedy occured. The boys got into in-to the boat after Mr. Turner had returned to his sheep. o |
