Show Sunlight Puts Vitamin D Content in Egg Yolk The world has milk from contented content-ed cows ; some day it may have eggs from Irradiated hens. That seems possible from an announcement an-nouncement by the Department of Agriculture that 15 minutes' exposure expos-ure of a hen to a carbon arc lamp will Increase the vitamin D content of her eggs. There are relatively few potent natural sources of vitamin vita-min D, the egg yolk is one of the most valuable of these. The studies of the department Indicated In-dicated the diet of the hen and the amount of sunlight she receives during dur-ing the laying period make considerable consid-erable difference in the vitamin content con-tent of the egg yolk. It was determined that the vitamin, vita-min, which In human food promotes the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus and thus aids the development de-velopment of bones and teeth, can be Increased in the egg by feeding the hen cod liver oil or by exposure expos-ure to natural or artificial sunlight. |
