Show the story of copper in utah 01 1 or IM 4 4 F e f ea 14 Y N y 4 1 I t M jg st s caf i alfet lf eT 1 opening of utah copper mine at bingham bangham aided in rapid expansion of electrical and mechanical era during first quarter of century by pro providing providen low priced copper editors note this la Is the third of a series erica of 0 eight articles article titled the story of copper in utah the twentieth century might well be called the century ot of copper be because caise of the widespread developments in th the e production of the red metal that followed follow e d the opening 0 of f utah copper in 1 1914 this pioneering aided in ili the rapid expansion ot of the electrical era by providing vital copper at a lower cost after jackling had shown the way at bingham tor for large scale copper production from low grade deposits the development of oc nevada consolidated soli dated pay nay consolidated and hoernel in arizona and the chino mine in new mexico alexica and other low grade mines followed swiftly A now new era was established in production ot of low priced copper early in the twentieth century to aid the swift expansion of industry during the first quarter of 0 the century the limits ot of this short series of articles permit tracing briefly the events that led up to the establishment in ent and progress of the utah copper bingham canyon oldest ot of mining districts has been the scene of more or less profitable mining since 1804 siliceous gold or ore e and silver bearing lead ores that so frequez frequently aly occur in important copper districts were sought in the early days clays until 1000 1900 bingham Bing liani remained essentially sent senti ally a lead silver mining camp smelters shelters Sm elters were built at murray and gingham bingham junction now midvale near the jordan river 12 miles below bingham and a substantial part ot of the intake ot of these two plants came from 15 to 20 campara com para lively small underground mines in bingham canyon colonel enos A wall who had mining experience in fit colorado idaho and montana first visited the camp in july 1887 colonel vail was attracted by the usual signs ot of copper then according to the story he entered an old adit started probably about abou 1865 when prospecting was nas firs farst t done by federal sold soldiers lers under general P connor hist first command ant at ft douglas wall became interested intel ested and acquired property in the district by location and during the suc succeeding 10 years added to his holdings through purchase and other locations during this period he spent approximately driving feet ot of tunnel drifts and crosscuts cross cuts in the hills bills this exploratory work began to untold unfold the possibilities at bingham canyon as each toot foot 0 of work added to the evidence that the copper bearing mass was large although low in grade wall financed his work by the sale ot of the brickyard mine at mercur utah and the yampa property near the highland boy at bingham the fourth article in this series will appear in n these columns soon |
