Show news THE BY PAUL MALLON released by western newspaper union SMALL accomplishments WORRY GOP LEADERS washington why some republican leaders are reaching for the whip la is not difficult to ascertain you can guess this one accurately from the scoreboard which to date shows no runs no hits and innumerable errors their congressional leadership Is in danger of nullification and t this hi s of course means nullification of democracy the matter lg Is no less im portent than that the Truma unions who look at the situation gleefully as a chance to ruin n the election prestige of their adversaries need new glasses the republicans who think they can gain political I 1 prestige by appealing to class groups are no less blind the only development which could save this democracy la is for the republicans to io get the he chance for leadership which the people gave them in the last election otherwise there will be no leadership only nullifying conflict at the belm M mr r truman did not have to call 0 oft if his vacation tor for a crisis in greece he ha has one 0 ne here at home which would warrant attention it if you do not believe me look at the scoreboard on the 9 gross ross washington leadership to date the closing of the senate hearings normally would bring a report and bill on union reform within a week or 10 days then will come I 1 long ong senale benale debate which reporters suspect cannot be concluded tor for three or more weeks the house committee was late getting started for some reason but has a plan to acet its bill out there ahead of the senate also the debate there will be shorter but after action Is taken by the house the two bills will go to conference because both bills will not be exactly alike and the final form will be wrangled out ultimately dispatched to the white whit house thereafter the legislation faces prospect of veto and it then may return to both houses to pass over a veto will resemble case bill anyone who figures all this can be done within two months month Is taking liberty with reasonableness it Is more likely to require three or more the anal form as nearly everyone has guessed by now Is likely to follow the case blu bill with some modifications or what will be called the ball taft smith bill this time it will be practically the same as mr truman vetoed last year ear before election those in charge of congressional affairs judge much of the debate will center around the proposals to abolish the closed shop and the restrictions strict ions upon industry wide bargaining both amendments of min senator ball one or both might be passed by one house but the chances of either passing both houses is slim so while some republican a n I 1 leaders ad a e are claiming the job th they are cl doing in congress Is I 1 t edl tremendous men dous they can hardly escape the conclusion that after all the current trouble e and more coming the result 1 is s apt to be just nhat was passe passed d last 1 session in a Democrat io congress and tailed failed then by veto look at the scoreboard again they have pushed up near to final enactment and then hen stopped the bill limiting the presidency to two terms a matter which could wait until 1950 at least before it c could have any practical effect also they have pushed abolition of the portal to portal backway increases incidentally labor did not object strenuously and the proposed cuts in the budget on the budget they have spent considerable time and patience on the theor theory Y that th they 1 e should pare expenses b before ado adopting p a tax reduction less tax reduction this latter step naturally has had the effect of postponing tax reduction which many republicans consider to be the swiftly needed key to economic advancement of the country equal in importance almost to labor legislation this proposed tax stimulation to economic activity has run into the truman promotion of more loans and relief to europe the question of loans has weakened some republican backing tor for a 20 per cent cut and caused some congressmen privately to talk about 15 or 10 pe per cent or maybe even less now I 1 am informed with the utmost reliability the truman a administration has not contemplated getting anything from abroad in return for the loa loans n 9 indeed high democrats tell n me n e they cannot get anything la in return for the money for instance any guarantees fr from om greece or italy or the other na ca eions which would promote our struggle to maintain our ideals la in those nations against the growth of communist and russian sian interests or any commitments i |
