Show SONS OF UTAH SMELT SMELTER E R WORKERS WIN scholarships united states smelting smelling Sm elting refining and mining mill ing company inaugurated a plan in ili june 1939 ot of granting scholarships at the university ot of utah to sons of 0 its utah employees plo purpose ot of the scholarship program Is to give recognition to employees tor for long and loyal service to offer a college education to sons ot of such employees who might not other otherwise I 1 e hit hive v e the opportunity to enter the U university diversity iver sity and to stimulate a an interest among young people in dommu communities cities surrounding the comp companas anys operations in engineering as a profession at first two scholarships were offered the downie davidson Dav ldson muir jr scholarship tor for study in mining and geology was named for or the late vice president in charge ot of western operations the walter hazen fardley eardley scholarship tor for study in nonferrous non ferrous metallurgy was named for or the late manager of the midvale plant these two scholarships have been offered each year since 1939 and have been available to sons of day wage workers who have been continuously employed tor for five years or more at the companas comp anys operations in utah or to son sons of such workers whose services with the company wore were continuous for 10 years or more at one or more of its operations in utah and were terminated by death or retirement within the 10 year period prior to the current award applicants must have been graduated from an accredited high school or its equivalent their scholastic record in high school must be 0 ot f an acceptable standard and to in addition they are required to pass various tests as prescribed by the tha university ot of utah scholarship committee all scholarships carry an annual stipend ot of tor for a tour four year university course the students are given an ity to work at one ot of the companas comp anys plants during summer vacations an additional scholarship was announced in march 1941 in memory of the late E A hamilton former gen general era manager ot of mines of the c company 0 tills this scholarship Is governed by the same rules and requirements qui quire remen ments as the others and carries an equal annual stipend eligible tor for this scholarship are the sons of 0 united states smelting smelling Sm elting refining and mining company salaried employees whose salary range falls within a stipulated maximum sons ot of former salaried employees whose services with the company were continuous tor for ten years or more at one of its lutat operations and were terminated by death or retirement within the ten year period prior to the current award and whose salary range came within t the stipulated m maximum a x I 1 in it m are also eligible in 1939 three scholarships were awarded melvln melvin joseph belach son ot of joseah 33 belich an employee of 0 the izavale plant for 20 years received the walter hazen eardley bardley scholarship he was a graduate of 0 the jordan high school in 1938 the tha D D muir jr scholarship was won by alvin leroy peterson Pete raon a graduate of 0 granite high school in 1938 son of at george P peterson who was mine carpenter at the U S mine for or 16 years alvin left his studios at the university during 1942 to join the army air corps conway W nielsen was given a special metallurgy award for his bis jordan high school scholastic record hla his lather father niels nielsen Nl elsen had worked 36 years at midvale plant in various capacities the 1940 award tor for the D D muir jr scholarship was given to eugene willard pearson also a jordan high S school ch 0 0 I 1 graduate whose lather father milo W pearson had been employed 14 years in the midvale plant unloading department no applicant qualified for the 1940 walter hazen eardley scholarship the 1941 D D muir jr scholarship was awarded to joo joe Tl bolla jr a bingham high school graduate in 1940 wb whose ass father had been mine blacksmith at lark tor for over 10 years joe G jr a murray high school graduate in 1941 whose tather father had been employed at midvale plant for or 17 years was awarded the walter haen eardley scholarship in 1941 the edward alexander hamilton scholarship was awarded to reid areld el jensen a murray high school graduate ot of 1940 whose lather father nells neils jensen had worked at the midvale smelter for or 30 36 years as a chemist two scholarships were awarded in 1492 the edward alexander hamilton scholars scholarship bip was awarded to john W anderson jr a bingham high school graduate choso whoso boso tather was a shift birs at tire W U S mine tor for over ovar 8 9 years the Walter W a it e r hazen eardley scholarship was as awarded to george arnold last a jordan high school graduate son stgeorge ot of george W last midvale flotation mill foreman tor for 7 years there was no qualified applicant for or the D D cufr jr scholars bir in 1942 |
