| Show new coal preparation plant W X s tn ut nature in one ot of its more generous moods endowed large areas in east bast central utah with beds ot of coal estimated to contain tons these beds in general are horizontal or nearly so are from a few inches up to twenty or more feet in thickness and are underlain and covered with layers of sandstone the sandstone and other material covering these beds Is from a few hundred up to 2000 or 1000 feet in ili thickness in its struggle tor for continued existence and against the inroads of competitive fuels the coal industry has found it necessary to adopt the latest developments in machinery tor for mining and preparing this coal for or the tha ultimate consumers large cutting machines literally saw the coal into large blocks these are then drilled and blasted huge loading machines are next moved lato into the rooms and by means of them the coal Is loaded into mine cars and hauled to the surface by powerful gerful electric locomotives ce crews of skilled workmen are required in these operations gone beyond all recognition are the trees and vegetal matter that were the origin ot of these coal beds but bag still till recognizable are the weaks breaks of what millions of years ago were layers of clay crul and silt in this vegetal matter but which through the ages have been compacted and now are called part ings and bony these partings and bony are waste products tn in that they have little fuel value for many years coal was sold as run of 0 mine or separated into a few sizes by screening the partings and bony being removed only from the larger sizes to such extent as was possible by hand picking helping utah to hold its position as an important Import aut coal producing state and also to meet the demand tor for many different sizes ol of clean coal the united states fuel company has adopted the best practices of the eastern and mid central coal fields lit in the preparation ot of its coal its new preparation plant at illah hiawatha atha just completed late in 1938 and the only one ol of its kind in the utah field Is pictured above and contains the very latest in coal prop preparation propagation equipment an interesting feature in this new plant is that all ot of the coal which will pass through a 5 inch round opening actually to Is washed with water which enables these waste products to be ba removed not only from the large sizes but also from the small sizes the facilities provided tor for separating the washed product into a nu number ber ot of sizes for or drying tor for waxing m to eliminate dust and for or re mixing any or all ot of the sizes ena enables bles the company to produce all ol of the sizes ot of coal desired both by in and domestic users this progressive step augurs well forthe future or 0 coal industry and the united states fuel company is to bo be complimented on its foresight and initiative |
