Show the livestock situation by J A Me mcnaughton Naughton the fat cattle market continues to carry it ft strong undertone on the los angeles angelea union stock yards despite some soine bowness in the re tall trade marketing resistance to any further advances in beet beef costs however there laa definite shortage in numbers of fat cattle available for slaughter and no indication of any sizeable increase in supplies for some weeks to come ii in most of california range feed la Is in a k hi I 1 it lie g very unsatisfactory growth due both to cool weather and insufficient rainfall As a result of short grass crops in most parts of california it seems certain that the movement of grass fat beef to coast markets will be later than usual it Is possible albl that unless general rains are received very soon there may be some distress movement of thin cattle to feedlots feed lots and irrigated pastures in Sacramento the valley the situation is very serious and it Is reported that rainfall for the season from jelv 1 to february 28 has been the smallest since 1870 not only is there ground for or serious concern regarding the spring an and d summer grass beet beef supply but it also seems likely that unless warm rains are had in the early part of march there may be a larger pei percentage of thin spring lambs than last year all lit in all indications point to some shortage in both beet beef and lamb supplies in california during the next 60 days at the least the result Is that cattle and lambs moving moung out of the irrigated valleys particularly the imperial in southern california and the salt river country in central arizona are ine meeting eting very active inquiry on the lo 10 los angeles market the marek ting of hogs continues to be of heavier volume than during tile the last several years but demand Is broad indicating that consumers are turning to relatively low priced pork to offset the smaller beef supply at this writing good grades of fed steers are selling on the los angeles market at to and choice long fed steers are considered quotable to 1060 or bet tor ter cows are in active demand with will most sales at to and many fat cows up lip to a cut or better the hog market continues around to 9 0 a ewt ott t with ath some sales of grain fed hogs up to pat fat lambs ara selling mainly at 8 to a cwt cat both cattle and lamb prices are well nell above aboe a year ago while hog bog pi prices ices are slightly lower |
