Dear Grandpa Kangaroo: Well, here I am In the zoo, though Ive never been anywhere else, and Mamma says I must tell you that 1 am I, or I am me, or I am myself, or you wouldnt know It Of course I can undertsand that as youve never seen me, and I never saw myself until I came Into the world a few months ago. Mamma says Im a fine child and that you would be proud of me If you could see me. She hopes I can learn to leap as wonderfully as you do, but she says you have a lot more room In than we have in the zoo. I am getting to be a big boy kangaroo now. For a long time I used 'to run to Mammas pouch whenever I felt frightened and she kept me there so nice and safe. I could look out at the world but I didnt think so much of it then. ' I like It better now. I dont ijow whether the world would care 'if It kne, but 1,Sfiould . think It would. A child came along the other day and saw how I copied Cousin Brush- Bureau of Standard erates With Radio Broad casting Stations. & Co-O- p- Checking the frequency of transmitting sets is one way in which tha with bureau of standards radio broadcastiug stations. Since the strict ruling of the federal radio commission that assigned frequencies be adhered to within 0.5 kilocycle, many devices used by stations to observe the ruling have been calibrated by the government standards experts. "A broadcasting station must expend considerable money and time in order to maintain its assigned frequency," says L. J. Briggs, of the bureau of standards, In a recent communication. A suitable device which will Indl-eathe frequency at which the broadcasting station transmits cannot be made up from odds and ends secured at random. This fact Is not appreciated by all broadcasting station operators, as Is evidenced by some of the devices sent to the bureau for calibration. The bureau has refused to calibrate any apparatus which was of poor construction or that seemed to be unreliable as a frequency standard. Piezo oscillators and frequency meters (wave meters) are included In devices generally employed by broadcasting stations for checking transmitting frequency. The piezo oscillator is the most accurate checker now In use, says Briggs. Frequency qieters as usually constructed will not register a frequency change as small as 0.5 kilocycle and so are not suited for complying with the law. ' Frequency meters, unless specially designed, have been found by the bureau of standards to change their calibration without frequent recalibration. During the last four months 44 So Nice and Safe. broadcasting statnons have requested calibration of piezo oscillators at the tailed Wallaby who was sitting with bureau. It isnt Impossible at all. In fact, there may be even more weeks" than that during the new year. Marlon, manager of the Research department of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, in regard to the number of "weeks that advertisers in our newspapers and magazines have ' succeeded in obhaving set aside for special servance to capture, the Interest of the public." ' In making up the list of these weeks, he was assisted by John Cotton Dana of the New Jersey Public library, the United States Chamber of Commerce, the bureau of business standards of the Shaw Publications, the Chicago Dally News and the New York Times. When he had finished his labors he discovered that the 52 weeks In the year, had been stretched In 135 weeks! If you doubt that there may be other weeks" added to the list that Mr. Marlon has compiled, talk to the governor of any one of our 48 states and learn from him how often he is beseeched by some day namer or week designator" for him to Indorse this, that or the other day" or week." It may be that his approval for Eat More Pecans Week" or Stop Begging Rides Week" or Wash Your .Windows Week" is sought. Or, If the applicant thinks that he can have his cause sufficiently advertised without devoting a whole week to it, he asks merely for Indorsement of an Apricot Day" or Play With the Children More Day." or "Stepmothers Day. One eastern governor receives thousands ot such letters during the course of thi year. They say something like this: Dear Governor: We are going to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Antl-IloThief association here next ne nth and hccause it Is such an Important occasion In the history of our state, we would appreciate It very much if you would write a letter giving your . g , n W - None.
