it is not the law t 4 of evolution thit that so immediately concerns us as agthe law of life embraced in in and which constitutes so vital a part of evolution billions of forms of life daily perish of life wisely decreed by nature or natures N agures god as the basic part of the law of progresso sSt and notwithstanding some modifications called reason which distinguishes human beings from lower forms of life and which has been the slow unfolding of instinct the law of life as manifest among sentient beings is precisely that so strikingly manifest in the struggle for life among the lower animals the extreme manifestation of the law of life by sentient son tient beings is called greed some four or five years ago the writer with several sever al companions was camping at birch springs in gold run canyon A large colony of squirrels had preempted the locality and were very timid during leisure moments the writer by means of crumbs of bread succeeded in taming the colony it was the law of life following lines of least resistance resi stence in the pursuit of subsistence they became so unafraid that they climbed into our laps jumped to the table dined with us and frequently disputed possession one old fellow doubtless the patriarch of the colony large and powerful who had become gray and morose during a score acdore or so of nut gathering seasons repudiated our invitations to approach nearer than ihan five or six feet helas he was feared if not hated by his descendants he discriminated between large and small crumbs of bread and when he saw members of his family rushing pell mell for a choice crumb one ortho leaps landed him in the midst of his relatives with vicious spite and growls meantime striking right and left with his oceh open hands lie he seized the crumb and tucked it into int q one of hia pockets pocket st it was an interesting study of the universal law of life abild ana we pampered the old chap until his pockets were full to td
