| Show the story of milling and at midvale VIP lu u axy 4 P ak V Y 4 AZ ilk K A Y I 1 A A ok large grinding units in the midvale utah mill of the united states smelling smelting sm elting re n ng and M n I 1 n a com pany grind the crude ores into pulp to free the metals fed into these units I 1 s ore from the companas comp anys mines and that shipped to the plant for treatment on a custom basis editor editors Edi tori ii note this la the second of a series of five articles on th the story 1017 of mill inin ienir and sm melting elting of lead zinc ore at mid midvale v ale in early U utah tah mining days there were some outcroppings outcrop pings 0 of rich ore bodies which made many small operations practicable and profitable however the picture changed considerably with the exhaustion of 0 such outcroppings outcrop pings the search tor for new ore bodies quite generally became the task 0 of larger companies having finances and organizations adequate tor for the costly tedious and mostly disappointing work ot of examining drilling and developing mine prospects the united states smelting smelling Sm elting renning refining and mining company entered the coal business through the united states fuel company at hiawatha utah incorporated in 1915 while its midvale lead smelter was treating company and custom ores the united states smelting smelling Sm elting refining and mining company continued work tor for the advancement of metallurgical practices this company Is generally credited with leading out in the application of the bagli ouse method of catching metal particles which were formerly lost in smelter fumes for many years the large and small producers of ore in utah and the west who shipped to the smelt ers received no pay tor for the zinc line content of the ore but were penalized because of the inability of the smelters shelters sm elters to economically separate the zinc line this company was instrumental in solving this vital problem with the result that a vast amount of utah low grade sulphide ore previously worthless became commercial ore this was accomplished first through the use of 0 electrostatic separation at the midvale ilant and later in 1918 the first selective flotation plant in the united states was built by a subsidiary company operating in an adjoining state stale A pilot plant operated successfully at midvale was logically followed by the building ol of a crushing plant and selective flotation concentrating mill adjacent to the midvale lead ead smelter tor for the treatment of the lead zinc sulphide ores now commercially valuable the present midvale flotation mill consists ot of three separate structures course coarse crushing plant the flotation mill itself and the thickener building the large flotation mill contains tour four units with a total capacity ot of approximately 1700 tons of lead zinc sulphide ore per day THE THIRD OP OF THESE ARTICLES WILL APPEAR SOON |
