Show news from our boys in the armed service mgt sheldan benson with veteran engineer unit in france ath army group france the bridge builders of the engineer regiment following the advance of U S seventh army troops in lt gen jacob L devers ath army group have opened approximately miles of supply lines from the riviera to the rhine this is the unit to which sergeant sheldon L benson son of mr and mrs roy benson is attached and the following is some of the history of the unit since it went overseas the germans best jobs in demolition these combat engineers have constructed 26 highway and 23 railroad bridges all large semi permanent structures stretching from southern france beachheads to the german border they opened railroads from marseilles to lyons ten days ahead of schedule and won a 2 commendation from lt gen alexander M patch seventh army commander who said this lifeline life line enabled his army to push on despite a threatened supply shortage my men have a pride in their work and their regiment said colonel richard B dunbar of fort worth texas regimental commander skilled at all army engineering gi arts and apply ingenuity and a scrounging talent when supplies are lacking he cited one railroad bridge constructed from the carriage of a captured german railroad gun construction men of the the oldest engineer unit in combat overseas are versatile they rebuild harbors repair roads clear out blown up tunnels and operate rock quarries they removed mines north of the garigliano river said to be the largest concentration of mines encountered during the italian ian campaign veterans of 32 months overseas service these men wear seven campaign stars they landed in england in july 1942 operated in oran and tunisian north africa and won many citations for combat work in sicily and italy gurr brothers complete training for air force gunners mr and mrs peter H gurr announces that two more of their sons have made advancements in the ranks of our armed forces and completed or will complete their schools this week end the two grayson and kendell both are qualifying as turret gunners in the army air corps and both will have the rank or corporal grayson finished his work at the las vegas gunnery school and was given his promotion last sunday he will be a top turret gunner and is waiting at the las vegas school for further orders he was up here over night the first of the week and may get to spend some more time home before going overseas kendell will finish his school and graduate as a bottom turret gunner at a massachusetts flying school on easter sunday but likely to get home before taking off for the front unless he comes west to be shipped out seaman J C hulet is married in los angeles on march 14 that seaman J C hulet son of mr and mrs wallace hulet of this community was married on march has been announced by mr and mrs hulet the bride was the former jean mower a daughter of mr and mrs J F mower of provo who visited here for a few days when J C was home on his furlough at the completion of his boot training and has also been here for the past week from provo where she is staying at present with her people the marriage took place in los angeles mr hulet Is now stationed at san pedro with the navy benson haycock and Carl Morris I 1 get gel together in base hospital relatives of benson haycock and carl morris received word some time ago from froin them stating that they had got at a base hospital in england for a nice visit this occurred during february just after benson was recovered enough from a two months hospitalization for trench foot he contacted while on the french german front early in december mrs haycock here found that bensons and carls APO was the same number and sent the word to benson and as soon as he could get out of the hospital he hunted carl up the latter is stationed at a hospital in the same area as a member of the medical corps this was the first time either had been able to see anyone from home for a long time and really enjoyed seeing each other mrs haycock states that because of her husbands feet being still tender he has been sent to a cook and bakers school elwood page lloyd stubbs and ward lowe have reunion in france fiance elwood page in a letter receive received ed by his parents mr and mrs john page during the week tells of rn meeting et and having a reunion with cal lloyd stubbs and cal ward lowe recently somewhere on the western battle front elwood is an ambulance driver in the medical corps and lloyd and ward are in the truck division in his letter elwood said he was having supper one night and looked up square in to the face of stubbs after a hilarious meeting stubbs said that lowe would be along shortly ly they all got together for a nice visit the letter states with lowe and stubbs being the first persons from here that elwood had seen since going over there |
