Show school Board Reorganized at first meeting of year the first meeting of the year for the iron county board of education on monday of this week was devoted to forming a new organization within the group studying ways and means to keep the school going in the face of the draft of several lea teachers chers in the district and some other n minor matters dr james S prestwich was named president of the board e placing james C robinson former member from here and who voluntarily retired from the board in december after serving the schools of the district very capably for the pa past st twenty years samuel abbott of paragonah Para gonah was made vice president of the board mr abbot is the oldest member in years of service on the board at the present time miss janet rollo who has been clerk of the board for the past twenty nine years and who had notified the board that she was not a candidate for reappointment reappoint mem was nevertheless made clerk for another two years N J barlow and board member wilson N lunt were authorized to attend a meeting oi 01 the state school board association this week end to ask that this organization work out a definite policy in asking for the deferment of school teachers threatened with induction this action was taken because of the tact fact that ten teachers in this district are eligible for induction under the new orders from the selective service headquarters four flour of these men are teachers in the parowan carowan schools newell B weight head of the music department which induction is imminent morris rowley principal of the elementary school lamont parowan carowan high coach and marvin graf instructor in social science nd history mr weight is registered eddith with an arizona draft board the rest with the iron county board other teachers affected are monte dailey bailey cedar city high coach who wh 0 is registered with an idaho board eardley madsen science clarence anderson vocational agriculture and harry plummer english and speech in the cedar high morris buhanan of the cedar grades and J C haws english and science in the cedar jr high the board already faces a problem in filling the place in the cedar high faculty left by the resignation of george hess who left for the granite district last week there is such a shortage of teachers now that if any of these teacher go it will probably cause a curtailment of activities in their departments and may cause their elimination entirely the board went on record as approving proposed legislation designed to extend teacher retirement ben befits to all school employed emp loyes including clerks accountants custodians en mechanics etc |
