Show county 4 H clubs hold outing at duck creek the annual county 4 H club outing was held at duck creek forest recreation camp in the dixie national forest monday tuesday and wednesday assisting county agent lamont lament E in conducting the camp were state 4 11 club leaders david sharp jr and fern shipley and extension forester J whitney floyd of the U S A C logan utah club members leaders parents and friends assembled at the camp ground monday evening and after making camp and eating supper a very enjoyable campfire program was enjoyed tuesday was the main day of the outing and such activities as handicrafts which included the making of baskets from pine needles was taught to leaders ana 4 H club girls nature study hikes were conducted by extension forester J whitney floyd and local forest ranger wilford bentley after the nature study trip a plant identification contest was held two 4 H club teams tied for winner of the contest roselee lund and betty kennedy of the marvelous meal makers club of modena and buelah and roma lyman of the quick switchers chers club of parowan carowan Pa rowan all made a score to tie for winner such active games as softball soft baU tetherball volleyball and horse shoe pitching were enjoyed by all during the late afternoon and evening tuesday evening another enjoyable campfire program was conducted at which club groups presented songs readings and stunts after which forest supervisor albert albertson of trie dixie national forest spoke on national VS 10 of their effi efficient cint use and conservation this talk was followed by the main speaker of the evening who was president wm win R palmer who explained very interestingly the organization of the piute diute indian nation at the time of the coin coming of he pioneers and then told some very enjoyable piute diute indian legends following the campfire program jim applegate of the forest service showed three sound films explaining pla ining the importance and use of national forest resources each morning at A M the camp participated in an appropriate flag raising ceremony friday morning grant seaman of the forest service demonstrated the and precautions to follow in building caring for and putting out a camp fire after which extension forester J whitney floyd presented a very c enlightening n demonstration on fire hazards in rural areas and outlined proper safeguards against such hazards ar d s the usual log sawing contest was conducted friday morning also in which nine teams participated clair robinson and myron abbott of the wranglers 4 11 livestock club from paragonah Para gonah won first in the log sawing contest jimmie anderson and gerry thornton of the same club won second and roselee lund and leon iverson won third I 1 due to heavy rains just prior t to 0 opening of the camp and threatening storm clouds during the outing more than half of the clubs in the county failed to attend however clubs from modena Ka narra cedar city parowan carowan Pa rowan and paragonah Para gonah were represented at the outing al though the rains dampened the grass and other foliage in the camp ground as well as the feet of the campers spirits were not dampened in the least and the 65 people who participated in the outing felt that it was one of he most enjoyable and profitable ever held state slat e 4 H club leaders D david avid sharp jr and fern shipley ha have e decided that club camp at duck creek next year will be held the latter iatter part of june or the fore part of july in order to avoid the august rainy season which usually interferes ter feres rather seriously with 4 H lub club camps |
