Show FARM PROBLEMS DISCUSSED AT ANNUAL AAA convention food for freedom administrative plans and suggested changes in program details were major problems attacked by AAA officials at the annual utah state convention ot of the agricultural adjustment administration held january 21 to 24 at the utah state agricultural college in logan representing iron county at these meetings were J M palmer chairman of the county AAA committee herman E bayles and parley moyle members M A gardner treasurer and lamont lament E county extension agent more than committeemen from utah attended the convention and were housed in the newly dedicated rural arts building on the college campus president E G peterson of the college said that the real significance of the farm program is that it is trying to do something about the liberty and human rights which are in the declaration of independence a and nd constitution instead of merely writing them down on ex pensive ive paper to be used in speeches and orations arthur gaeth intermountain news commentator comment ater stressed the importance of food in per paring for and carrying on a war and in winning the peace he said we must have food for freedom as well as for war and winning freedom is more important porta nt than winning the war and production of raw materials with which to win the war is the big job of farmers G F geissler of washington D C assistant director AAA western region said that during 1941 was the first time people of the nation had the opportunity t to 0 see all of the AAA program in in operation the machinery was there but 1941 was the first time it was needed to make adjustments both upward and downward increased production was needed in some commodities he pointed out and the adjustment machinery was set in motion to take care of these increased needs eldon colby of spokane representing the federal crop insurance corporation told of the progress of the insurance program and what it has done to stabilize farm income the old farm problem is that thai when crops are good the prices are poor and when crops are poor me prices are good the crop insurance program is an attempt to correct this situation he declared committees were appointed tu study the detail of the program and to investigate possible changes recommendations drawn up in each committee meeting were then pre dented to the entire group for approval prior to being submitted to the state committee for consideration committees organized were to consider general program operations program administration in the counties supervision crop insurance yields and rates marketing quotas commodity loans and allotments lot ments special features of the conclave were the annual banquet held each year in connection with the conference which was served in the college cafeteria eteria and demonstrations on irrigation and on noxious j control and clean seed wet I 1 I 1 |
