Show associated CIVIC CLUBS MEET AT SAUNA SALINA SATURDAY the regular monthly meeting of the As associated socia ted civics clubs of southern utah was held at salina on saturday january at which time matters pertinent to the development of southern utah were discussed L C montgomery president or the state cattle and horse growers association gave a talk in which he emphasized the need for more cattle in the southern part of the state he said that the utah cattlemen are smallest cattle raisers in the united states and that the numerous small checks comma coming into the many communities of the state are a great help to the people he urged more careful breeding of better stock and voiced his opinion that cattle of mixed dairy and range breeds should not be allowed on our summer ranges dairy cattle entering the meat trade should be sold as veal mixing them on the range with range type cattle had the effect of causing buyers to pay lower prices for good range cattle because seen on the range they give the buyers the imbres sion that quality was lacking he further pointed out that after the war is over present cattle herds in the U S will have to be reduced materially he urged stockmen stoc kmen to see that their herds were carefully culled bulled and that only their best stock be retained when reductions in present numbers become necessary rulon F starley ariey St of the state banking department reported on the liquidation of over forty banks that had gone broke in utah since 1925 he stated that his department had been successful in collecting an average of on the dollar on closed banks he said that the cost of collection had been only ac on the dollar collected he also pointed out thai during turi ngOne bue time his department part ment had employed 85 persons and that at ai present they were only employing eleven his opinion was that in 1925 the state had too many banks for the good of the business and of the patrons he also said that he thought no bank in utah should loan as much as per acre on farm land two national banks in southern utah and 15 in the state now have assets of 22 and of this amount is loaned back to the people I 1 livestock loans account tor for more than half the amount loaned senator francis lundell of utah county asked for the clubs support in having a road change made between payson and vineyard he pointed out that such a change would shorten the distance from southern utah to salt lake city by a dis distance ta nce of 18 miles that it would eliminate several curves nine red lights several dug ways and a section of the state highway where the traffic is heaviest and where most of the automobile fatalities tali ties occurred during the past year in utah county the matter was turned over to the roa road d com cittee for action the road program for the coming year was discussed by evans and black blackett ett of the state engineering gin gi commission they explained that they were obligated to match federal funds as far as the state funds would go in building and repairing military roads that have b been een designated by the government ern ment frank martines Mar lines dis discussed cussed the need for the 15 southern utah coun ties to decide on what they want and go after af ter it in a united fashion rather than as single groups he said that had this section of tip state decided on one location for the proposed bed hospital rath er than 8 locations that it likely would have been located in this section the resignation of ray E carr who for the past nine years has been secretary of the association was accepted and the office of the club was moved to ephraim in an effort to cut down expenses of the association allen alien randle handle of the state fish and game department olson of the forest service both spoke briefly 1 l the february meeting r club will be hel held d in III k r the |
