the famous zion mount carmel highway tunnel in southern utah to participate in its formal dedication to public use although it Is only 20 26 miles long this Is the greatest project of its kind ever undertaken by the U S national park service and bureau of public roads its cost was close to two million dollars und and it incorporates two tunnels one feet long and the other more than feet long in its if short length dedication ceremonies were held within the longest of the tunnels whose outer wall la Is pierced with six galleries through which ventilation ti and sunlight are admitted gallery 1 the largest of them all was the scene of the formal dedication within this gallery the stand from which various governors national park service and union pacific officers and other representatives senta tives of the U S government and the state of utah made their address was erected marvelous ilar relous accoustI cs prevail at this point in the tunnel and there them was a aple ample room tor white splendor above the tunnel gallery the audience heard mr albright as master of ceremonies recall that the day was the sixty third birthday of stephen T blather Mat lier his predecessor as superintendent erin of the parks service to whom be gave credit for inception of the carmel highway as a the road Is officially known mather died last january after making mailing his bis last official trip of inspection spec tion lon of the work on the tunnel with E S superintendent of zion and bryce canyon national parks presiding president heber J grant gave an invocation in which he be asked the divine blessing upon the undertaking ue ile praised the cooperation ot of the parks service and the states of utah and ArI arizona ZODa without whose help he said the task would have been impossible many engineering difficulties were encountered in building the road and tunnel through the mountain range which is ia feet ugh high involving scaling precipitous cliffs on ropes rope and ladders so close was wag the calculation on the tunnel which i Is g feet lo 10 long ng and 22 by 15 feet la in size that they varied only by inches when the bores borea met from two directions declaring too the work of the tb engineers had bad only to place the road where nature bad intended it should be built millions of years ago macdonald donnld hailed it as the symbol ot of a bigger idea of the cooperation and faith that is taking possession of the people of the united states governor dern in the same view said the people ot of utah do not need or want national parks within their borders as playgrounds for local people alone but are proud to these natural marvels with people of other states the audience included hundreds hundred of people of southern utah who had bad assembled within the portal of the tunnel to join with the governors erners party to la dedication of the road and observance of independence day they found the tannel portal and gallery gally gaily decked with flags nod and bunting and chairs chain placed for their comfort within a rock hewn work on the highway has ha been in progress for the past three years and its construction embodied nono borne and sheer face of one ot of the crimson cliffs of 0 zion national park here the longer ot of the two tunnels begins and penetrates this cliff tor for a distance of more than a mile the road finally dually emerges at the he top of the plateau from which zion canyon has been etched eons bons of time by one small river it accomplishes its purpose of shortening the distances between the three most colorful of all of the twenty two national parks in the united states gov gor dern aern dedicates blon mount blount carmel highway governor dern in his address at the dedication ceremonies stressed some of the of utah scenery it Is peculiarly appropriate that this great highway should be dedicated to the use of the people of the united states on our count rys birthday it la Is also fitting that this states in regard to uie ithe national policy of reserving their land and minerals from private entry but there Is no difference of opinion among them la in regard to abe national parks thebe areas of outstanding beauty are chiefly valuable tor for their recreational uses we do not need them not nor want them as playgrounds tor for our own people alone we are happy that they have been set aside tor for the enjoyment of all who may be attracted by their charm they are the show places of our nation in which every american holds a share ot of while zion national park and bryce canyon happen to be situated within the boundaries of the state ot of utah yet we are proud to share our ownership of these theae natural marvels with all the rest of our fellow americans and we say to them come out and inspect your property you will be proud of it and your pride ot of ownership will make you yon a better more pa patriotic american in the best sense zion national park has sometimes been referred to as yosemite done in oil I 1 trust you have bare all 11 II experienced the sense of hush and awe and mystery that comes over one olie as he be looks up at the great white throne or gazes from the temple of SIna wawa over toward angers angels landing with its gloomy gorge by sheer red and white cliffs feet high on either side it Is no wonder the indians regarded it as a spirit land to be entered only with fear and veneration when you come to bryce canyon national park you will find gin an entrancing fairyland with its spires towers and minarets mina of the most exquisite hues so delicately carved by nature that stone atone resembles lace statues monuments rals rala the eye can pick them out their beauty lingers long in the memory as a masterpiece muster of the giver of all good and perfect gifts drive 60 miles through the incomparable kaibab forest the largest tract of virgin timber la in the united states seeing herds of deer as you pass along proceed to bright angel
