Show OFFICERS GET TWO BIG STILLS on january sheriff J T leigh county attorney J shay abc federal officers and ferrel visited the arrowhead mine and ar covered what Is probably the cleverest clevere oi bootleg distilling outfit ever found in southern utah the officers found all of the country around arrowhead mine aline covered with snow so BO that evidences fidei lees of bootlegging were practically covered up in passing one of the old abandoned shafts however county attorney shay noticed an odor coming from the shaft and called over federal agent ferrel who mho confirmed the suspicion of mr air shay that there was wag something operating in the shaft about that time the sheriff who was the dump of a shaft below that upon which mr air shay and mr ferrel were standing noticed a different kind of dirt and alter after digging down several feet struck an abandoned shaft with a pipe running from the shaft which had been previously discovered and it was found that this was a shaft used by the bootleggers to dump their mash latter e after distilling the officers then set out to ascertain means to get the still but as there was no ladder and no means ot of conveyance there was apparently no no way to find the same finally about ten in the evening sheriff leigh volunteered to decoud into the shaft A number ot of long boards were spliced and the sheriff climbed down the shaft fifty feet on arriving at the last level sher iff lf fLIgh leigh e found a false floor part ot of which immediately Immedi atly commenced to cave in and he was forced to climb the spliced boards to the top A rope was found however and when lie he had bad rebated he was again lowered into the shaft and this time in feeling his v way ay down the side some of the timber came loose and in removing it he found himself at the entrance ol of an abandoned tunnel in which were two fully equipped whiskey stills many barrels of mash kiash and food and water enough to last a person several days the stills were operated by gasoline heaters beaters and the water was poured in from the top ot of the shaft by an ingenious line pipe the he tunnel was well ventilated and it is doubtful it if on an ordinary day the odor would have been noticed on account of lack of wind arid and the presence ot of snow on this day however a faint odor was discernable discernible discern able near the shaft which finally led to the discovery tile the case will be turned over to the federal court and although no one V W was found in attendance at the sti still I 1 I 1 it is expected that some arrests will be made shortly ARE AEE YOU GOING INTO THE III POULTRY BUSINESS several ot of our readers here 1 I and at paragonah Para gonah are thinking lumping I 1 seriously of going into the poultry business on a commercial 1 scale for their special benefit the times has arranged tor for a setles serles of articles on this subject the first of which appeared in our I 1 last issue and was on the subject I 1 of feeding this series of articles Is written by T AV anoland WN noland oland director and noel hall extension specialist of the missouri state poultry experiment station at mountain grove and can therefore l be considered as authentic I 1 in addition to these articles I 1 tit mr A L lewis ot of the para gonah milling co who is also a an n authority on oil poultry Is writing three or tour four splendid and ivory timely articles on the subject the first 0 of which will be found in this issue if you are inter ested in poultry it will pay you ito to preserve these articles 1 |
