Show grantsville GRANTS VILLE DISTRICT SCHOOL LIVESTOCK by DR HUGH HURST county agent beef cattle the agricultural possibilities of the county are numerous and varied they include cattle both beef and dairy sheep both farm flocks and range small grains horses and potatoes the beef cattle are rather numerous and are fair to good in quality showing a predominance of shorthorn and hereford breeding while we recognize that there is room for rauch much improvement pro that may be brought about through a more systematic culling and grading of stock yet they are above the average cattle of the state in quality tooele thoele county boasts of one of the best herds of shorthorns Shor thorns of the state even though they are comparatively few in number photograph no I 1 shows broadbooks Broad hooks barron barren with a group of his get on the farm of R A fenton of erda this noted sire has stood first in his class on various occasions ca and has been awarded grand champion cha m pion at the state fair 1921 1994 1 and at N north 0 rth salt lake show in april 1926 photograph no 2 shows a fine type t pe shorthorn cow with calves of the tk c breed that show typical variations in color that are characteristic ic of the breed dairy cattle while dairying in the county is still in its infancy yet there are numerous fine individuals both males and females which represent the idol last season and some good colts produced though not as many as we would have liked mares of the type and quality shown in the following cut when mated to one of the remount stallions should produce horses that would please any saddle lover hogs the hogs of the county are not pa particularly r ticul arly numerous yet most of the better class of farmers produce butcher and pickle enough first class hams and bacon ta t supply their home requirements quire ments there is a sprinkling of the various breeds of lard type hogs owned in the various settlements of the county this chase phase of agriculture will be stimulated because there is an abundance of good pasture byproducts front from the home manufacture of butter and skim milk and any quantity of grain all of which are vital to the brodu production c tion of good pork th the e people gene generally rally are seeing the necessity of carrying on a more nearly balanced type of agriculture and consequently are adding more and better animals and preparing to take better care of them small grains it has been recognized lor for many years that tooele thoele land was very fertile and produced abundantly of the various crops yet in 1925 she was thrown into the front ran rank k for t the he production of the best wheat shown at the state fair the prize winning grain was produced by R N bush on erain lover clover creek under the following cultivation ti land plowed in summer and early fall and seeded with turkey red forty five pounds per acre in the fore part of november 1924 there was very slight germination before the ground froze up that fall probably the majority of the seedlings winter killed the grain came up well in the spring of 1925 and grew rapidly when the ground was dry enough after the winter snow had melted off and the grain was up the field was gone over with th the e culli packer which pulverized the few clods left after the winter effect of freezing and thawing and left a fine mulch on the ground samples of this grain won first and second prizes and sweepstakes in open competition at the state fair besides wheat of the various van varieties aties oats barley and rye produce abundantly potatoes in years gone by tooele thoele city has produced the champion potatoes of the state but more interesting at the 1925 26 and 1926 27 the levy appears rather high lut but when h it t is understood that 43 mills in 1925 26 and 45 mills in 1926 27 are tax levies for building purposes it will be seen that the levy for maintenance is quite low to thoele tooele oc Is county school district claims to be the first county to abandon the bonding plan for the erection of new school buildings for the more popular fro Io pular plan te ian of the special tax or what may be called thelan the plan of pay as you go the funds for or the erection of the junior high school and gymnasium in conele tooele and the new high school to lie be built at grantsville Grants ville were raised by the special tax lax plan two senior high schools are maintained one at tooele thoele and another at grantsville Grants ville at ophir the ninth and tenth grades are taught and a junior high school is maintained at tooele thoele the school buildings of the dig district triet are mostly modern and up to date even the smaller schools many of them have modern heating beating plants and toilet facilities and others are being made modern where water is available the new junior high school at tooele thoele was completed december 18 13 1025 1925 at an approximate cost of it contains ten large class rooms and other smaller rooms and one of the finest school gymnasiums in the state of utah used jointly by the senior high school and the junior high school it has a balcony on two sides and across one end which together with seating capacity on the main floor furnishes ample seating capacity for all occasions in one end of the gymnasium is a beautifully constructed arched alcove which provides a place for dance orchestras and has b as proved to be e excellent xcell ent in acoustic properties the music sounding equally well in all parts of the building the senior high school building at tooele thoele completed in 1913 is a modern structure in every respect and provides a splendid place for all phases of high school work this school because of its standard of work and its organization and administration has recently been admitted to the north western association of secondary schools the grade school building at grants ville is one of the finest buildings of its type in in the state it was finished in 1912
