Show TOOELE the utah rio pioneers under the leadership of brigham young i oung came to salt lake valley on saturday july 24 1847 on sunday they held religious services and rested on monday they climbed ensign peak and there raised the stars and stripes on tuesday brigham with a company of men went out to black rock to view the great salt lake and bathe in in its waters while there professor orson pratt left the company and rode around the south shores of the lake and through throng rh tooele thoele valley as far as the adobe rock on E T hill just exactly six miles from the black rock where brigham young was camped and then returned and joined the lake party again giving professor pratt the honor of being the first of the utah pione pioneers ers to enter tooele thoele valley in the winter of 1848 three or four govern government meat herders gerders established herding quarters at black rock these herders gerders were taking care of government ni nt stock belonging to captain stansbury who ho was at the time en in surveying the great salt fag aged V ke its islands and other parts of utah however it was not until some time in the middle of september 1849 that the first settlers entered tooele thoele valley with a view to find homes and a settlement judson tolman wife and one child josiah call wife and one child and samuel mecham and wife were the first three families to enter tooele thoele valley and settle down with the object in view of making homes for themselves and children the three families came together the exact date mr tolman has forgotten but it was some time in the middle of september 1848 in their travels through the valley they took time to examine the best locations for homes and made trips into the canyons and upon the mountains in search of springs of water and groves of timber after a few days explorations they concluded to settle down on asdall a small stream just south of tofele tooele city and the stream has been called settlement canyon creek to this day extract published on history of tooele thoele as copied from the tooele thoele transcript of january 9 1903 from this small beginning through hardships hunger pain and suffering district however and later developments will vill bring new life to this camp the older inhabitants of the state will remember the mercur district when it was a rich and prosperous mining city today it is a camp of the past the mines having plays played d out of paying ore mercur was at one time the metropolis of the county and bid strong to remove the county s seat eat from tooele thoele to its prosperous community at the decline of mercur tooele thoele was on the incline the international smelting smelling company was starting the construction of its smelter on the east foothills of the valley and a railroad was being built through tooele thoele to connect with the trunk line of the salt lake route later made a part of the great union pacific system one year changed tooele thoele from a small farming community into a thriving industrial center its growth was overestimated at the time and tooele thoele beyond reason and it w Z t T I 1 r WAITING THEIR TURN came forth the beautiful city of too ele surrounded with wealth and opportunity port unity the oquirrh range of mountains to the east are the most unique in the entire world more than a third of the entire mineral wealth of the state has been taken out of this structure of natural wealth and billions of dollars worth of mineral still remains untouched the oquirrh range extends from the southern shores of great salt lake to bingham west to stockton southeast to ophir south to old mercur thence into the eureka mammoth and tintic gintic districts the great bingham district supplies the tooele thoele smelter with an endless chain of ore by a tram which operates over the mountain a distance of four miles the mining districts along the oquirrh range in tooele thoele county are among the oldest in the state the stockton district was opened up by men who composed the johnson army which passed through in the sixties ind and has enjoyed great prosperity at times and many men have been made rich from products of the mine this same district after a lull of several years is now coming into prominence as a camp through new and encouraging strikes of rich ore in virgin territory of old mines going farther south and east to the ophir district we find a rather remarkable record in the past awen ty five years the ophir hill 1111 mine owned and operated by the late senator dark clark has produced upwards of LAMBS OP OF THE FIRST E CLASS worth of ore several months back this mine was closed the officials stating that the property had been mined out millions of dollars worth of ore still remain in the I 1 I 1 r FRONTAGE OF NEW TOOELE JUNIOR SCHOOL BUILDING has just now reached the place where it can completely fill the clothes tailored for it almost twenty years ago tooele thoele is in need now of a large number of new dwelling places to house its increasing population and the fall of 1926 will undoubtedly see this need satisfied as the smelter is taking a home building program under its wing mr harry G baker local manager of the utah power light company and one of our most energetic citizens has taken the time and patience to compile the following statistics on tooele thoele city and county this will enlighten the readers on the wonderful growth of tooele thoele since that september day in the year 1847 merely the alie span of a life time statistical DATA tooele thoele county embraces square miles at an average elevation of close to feet above sea level population principal towns and settlements in the county county seat grantsville Grants ville ophir stockton all incorporated lake point lincoln milton E erda ada rda st john clover josepa ibapah wendover gold hill burmester Bur are unincorporated settlements county traversed by two national highways the lincoln highway and the victory also traversed by two transcontinental railroads union pacific main line to los angeles A western pacific main line to san francisco chief industries of county are smelting smelling Sm elting mining sheep and cattle raising and agriculture both by use of irrigation and dry farming salt making and refining total bonded indebtedness in 1925 was on a valuation of this indebtedness is the lowest in the entire state of utah tax levy for 1924 for county state and schools outside of towns was mills for mills the increase in 1925 was due to a 4 mill special tax voted to build the new high school gymnasium and junior high sch school in tooele thoele agricultural production in 1925 was winter wheat bushels spring wheat bushels oats bushels barley tooele 0 oele has over 1000 homes two I 1 L D S churches a methodist and a roman catholic church tooele has good grammar schools and here is located one of the tooele thoele county high schools with an enrollment of over students tooele thoele county is a good county t live in and tooele thoele city is a good community to live in and be proud of stein friesian and jerseys with the stimulus of fertile pastures flowing wells and excellent markets and individuals of merit for foundational stock the dairy business is bound to grow the accompany accompanying in 9 photo shows a type of cattle that will serve as mortgage lifters for any one that will treat them properly these fine cows are owned by H C russell ru ssell of st john who markets whole milk in tintie sheep while sheep has always held one of the most important phases of agriculture of the county since the beginning of its settled history the lack of summer range has placed a permanent and serious handicap on the west side of the county because of arid and condition of the state the range sheep will always occupy an important position in our sheep industry but the growing importance and popularity of the farm flock has recently eaten in roads into the sheep industry of the county hampshire sheep purchased from the famous herd of sons owned by the grantsville Grants ville sheep club are giving a very good account of their breeding and care the following ng are photographs of spring lambs that show type quality substance care and breeding horses while the horse situation has been badly neglected to the sorrow and misfortune of the people we still have a few farmers who have not lost their balance in favor of mechanical power there are at least six good stallions of the draft breeds owned in the various communities of the county the farmers are again taking hold of the situation and are breeding an in increased number of mares this season the saddle loving people especially those who are fond of saddle sports will be happy to learn that there is increased interest in the breeding of saddle horses there is one of the government remount horses standing in the county and will be utilized to his fullest capacity this season the same stallion was used in the county present time is the possibilities brought out recently in the southern part of the county for the production of certified seed potatoes they grow burbanks Burban hs early cobios blue victors idaho murals yields of four hundred to five hundred bushels per acre are common and usually they run considerable higher than that sugar beets do very well yielding up to thirty tons per acre but unfortunately tuna tely some of the best sugar beet areas are so far from the railroad beet production is not practical fruits and vegetables have always done well in jocele tooele valley wherever water is available berries in particular yield abundantly the quality 0 of f which is unsurpassed the one thing we need most is an increase of population to help develop our vast areas of fertile land and underground water which is abundant particularly in the southern portion of the county too many of us are land poor and consequently are standing in the way of our own development |
