G Hubner Hubner Hub- Hub led ner family in the town of Sorocaba Sao Paulo state I l This town is located approximately approximately miles west of I I Rio de Janeiro and has a aI ai I i p population of people t In ID addition to her Brazilian Brazil- Brazil jian t ian father and mother she sheI I i had three sisters and one I brother three of whom were f married The sister who lived at t home Maria Martha wasI was I 15 ws old IN REGARDS to her family family fam fam- ily fly Debbie says The family is a really knit closely-knit unit unitI I in Brazil The term family I applies to all relatives aswell as aswell aswell well as brothers sisters and andI I parents Debbie attended a private i girl all Catholic school She SheI I attended school six days a aI I week for 5 3 hours a day This gave her an opportunity to observe the school system and to improve on her Portuguese the native language language language lan lan- guage of Brazil t i I SHE KNEW no Portuguese 11 I f odor to her arrival in Brazil Learning a foreign language can be quite a task she says but I had to learn the language in order to com com- By listening ng to Portuguese 16 hours a day I learned quite rapidly Some English however was spoken in her Brazilian family The father liked Debbie Debbie Debbie Deb Deb- bie to correct his English grammar grammar grammar gram gram- mar and to teach him rum new words Her sister also spoke English which was helpful while she was learning Portuguese Port Port Port- f HAVING BEEN able to live with a family Debbie had a different viewpoint than that of a tourist She was able to learn how the Brazilian people actually lived and to observe many of their cus cus- toms Only by knowing how people people people peo peo- live can we learn to understand understand understand under under- stand them she adds With the cooperation of many helping helping helping help help- ing hands the American Field Service is opening the door which leads to understanding and friendship among the peoples of the world DEBBIE'S DEBBIE FOSTER family waited to lake take their vacation until her arrival so she could see more of Brazil and its sights The vacation took in 2000 miles which the family covered in 15 days From Sorocaba they traveled travel travel- ed to Belo Horizonte then to Caratinga to visit with an uncle then to see the primitive primitive primitive primi primi- tive coffee tree farms about 50 miles from Caratinga Their next stop was in Rio to visit a brother then they went camping on Cabo Frio Beach with an uncles uncle's family from St St. Paulo City DEBBIE WAS very fond of the meals her Brazilian mother moth moth- er cooked for her She reports reports reports re re- re- re ports that life is more leisurely in Brazil than in o 0 u r busy USA which was really a change for busy Debbie who is always doing something to have a good time or make a good time for others Debbie is the daughter of John and Stella Call 1213 North East she has three sisters Janet and Jackie who live at home and Cheryl Pierce who is married and living in Portland Ore DEBBIE IS now attending Viewmont High School where she is a senior The Viewmont Viewmont Viewmont View View- mont Chapter of will soon be making selections for students for the coming year Anyone interested in either going to a foreign country or having a foreign student live with his family please contact Debbie Call 1781 or Mrs Stan A.
