Col USAF During his time in the service he graduated from the U. U S. S Air Force Air Command and Staff College What ta are your reasons for seeking a position on the Davis County School Board I seek a position on on the School Board because I want better education for our young people The School Board members I have talked to seem to be occupied with seeing that facilities are provided but know little about the curriculum They say that the curriculum is left to the Superintendent and the Principals I am more concerned concerned con con- concerned about what our children are being taught and the quality of the teaching than the physical facilities that formulate the educational complex although this too must have consideration I am concerned that our schools have so many students who out drop-out and never graduate from High School I am concerned that many children are graduating from High School unprepared to earn a living yet not desirous of nor able to further their education Neither are they familiar with the opportunities and heritage of oC this Nation with its inherent responsibilities and are therefore easy prey of radical organizations the drug scene or otherwise are a lost resource to themselves as well as society I am concerned that many g gifted ted students eager to i learn and progress have told me that their opinion of our schools is that they are too often bored and too little k challenged I am concerned that our State loses many of oC our our best teachers to State out-of-State schools while in many cases having having having hav hav- ing to retain than less-than-best teachers for our own children In what way do you feel the selection of oJ textbooks textbooks text text- textbooks books and school curricula should be made ade f t. t By representatives from the Superintendents Superintendent's office principals teachers and parents Every book used in our school curricula should be read by a minimum of three competent representatives and if all three approve it itt t should then be approved by the selection committee as specified above I would recommend that every school in our District have one or more qualified parents nominated by the principal to meet each month with the Board of oC Education Education Education tion to exchange id ideas s and the representative parents can be briefed on proposed new programs and thus insure that parents and the School Board have complete com corn The representative parents would then carry these ideas back to the school PTA and other interested groups By following such a program the schools School Board and administrators will be aware of the needs and desires of parents and the parents will know of oC the limitations limitations limi limi- limitations and capabilities of oC the school system thereby responding responding responding re re- in the best interest of oC all concerned This program program program pro pro- gram will keep the school system from pulling surprises surprises surprises sur sur- on concerned parents Are you OU in favor of oJ trying programs in our schools Please comment COment on the tile Middle School Community Schools scheduling individualized instruction and any others youma you ma may wish to mention 4 3 Innovated or pilot programs should be conducted durf during dur dur- f ing the summer months with volunteer and selected stu stu- stu- stu dents By following such a program we can evaluate each program on its merit I do not want to subject all all' students students stu stu- dents to new concepts until they have been tried and properly evaluated The same applies to any new tests or techniques New programs and ideas should be tested and evaluated on selected gifted average and slower learners and then only with the parents consent before they are adopted as a part of the school curricula Objective studies of innovated programs programs- tried or in practice practice practice tice anywhere in the world should be made and evaluated Middle School As constituted at the present time I t have no objection to the Middle School and believe it has justifiable merit Community Schools Because adult education is is a life process adult classes should be available to meet High Sch School ol graduation requirements but even more important important important tant classes on high school and college level should be made available throughout the County so that adults can gain and pursue new vocational recreational recreational recreational rec rec- and cultural programs that can improve the individual individual individual in in- and the community College courses should be brought to the High Schools for qualified students Some students would therefore beable beable be beable able to accumulate hours of oC college credit thus giving them a better start when they enter the university There are many students who do not have the desire nor the ability to attend college These students should 1 have the opportunity in high school to develop trade and vocational skills Though we presently have some vocational vocational vocational voca voca- I training it should be expanded and upgraded This could be accomplished through cooperative programs between between be- be be between tween the school industry and business In this manner the student could leave high school qualified to go to work and earn a living as a productive and useful member member mem mem- member ber of oC society I do not believe that any new transfer student should be placed into a class until he has been tested and evaluated and then placed in the class or classes most nearly matching his abilities I am in favor of students progressing at their own level If a student of eight years is capable of competing with eleven year olds in math he should be so challenged r and if that same child is slow in English he should bein be bein in a class where he can be taught at his maximum ca ca- Likewise children with special talents in music art writing etc should have teachers and classes in depth for Cor their development J I r. r 1 fi sti to t f ft t 4 i- t ff t t 1 A 1 t JV Y Aid Ad answers s Will Voters y 4 f official meeting Board meetings meetings meetings meet meet- ings must be open and public Uni- form School fund and he must be well-acquainted well with Where we put gifted average and slow children in the same class we are apt to lose lase l both th the gifted and the slow student What is your opinion regarding teacher contract contract con con- t tract negotiations 4 Education should cost just what it costs to do a good job We cannot pay our good teachers enough and a poor teacher is always paid too much Good teachers are sometimes sometimes sometimes some some- times victims of regulations which creativity and effectiveness Less money should be spent for curriculum frills and more for teacher salaries I am in favor of paying teachers on a merit system Evaluate the teacher by the quality of the student and set up a pay scale according to the quality of teaching I want teachers to be professionals dedicated to their profession and held accountable for what a student learns For teachers to ban together as a trade union and negotiate negotiate negotiate ne ne- accordingly will accomplish little for the teacher the educational program or the student We need to evaluate evaluate evalu evalu- ate what students have learned academically as well as whether they understand our free enterprise system and whether or not the they have a sense of oC responsibility towards citizenship Such an evaluation must through necessity be both objective and subjective A merit system takes courage and time on the part of school administrators and the school board to administer and for this reason many shy away from it I do not believe teachers should be retained retained retained re re- or paid a given salary simply because of tenure If a teacher is not improving the quality of his students he should be dismissed from the school while the good teachers should be paid as much as we can possibly aff afford ord Harold aro J.
