Show Bass Record Set at Powell A 28-lb 6-oz. striped bass set a new record at Lake Powell on April 24. The previous record was a 21 -lb 9-oz. striper caught last fall. John Newburn of Page caught the record striper in Padre Bay 20 miles north of Glen Canyon Dam on a fat rapella lure in 10 feet of water. Wayne Gustaveson and Tom Pettengill, fisheries biologists for the Division of Wildlife Resources of the Utah Department of Natural Resources and Energy, and Ted Gardiner, Wildlife Resources conservation officer, witnessed the weighing. Gustaveson said the 41 -inch striped bass with a girth of 24 .5 inches was an 8-year-old female from the first plant of striped bass into Lake Powell in 1974. Males do not usually grow larger than 20 pounds. In future years, it may be possible to take a striped bass as large as 60 pounds out of Lake Powell, according to Gustaveson. However the average striped bass will be 6 to 10 pounds. The current freshwater striped bass record is 59-lb 9-oz. Fishing for striped bass. at Lake Powell is hot right now, says Gustaveson, but will slow down about May 10 when the fish begin spawning. After that, he does not expect striper fishing to pick up again until August. |
