The race begins at Deer Valley at 9:00am Saturday, July 14 and will finish with a barbeque and dance at the Homestead. "The horse is the . , most suseptible member of ' the team," says Marden. There will be a preliminary check Friday afternoon before be-fore the race to determine whether the horses who have entered the race are apparently appar-ently fit to compete. There will be several mandatory vet checks along the route and one at the finish. Dr. Marden says that the horses pulse, respiration and general condition will be tested. Marden plans to go over general hints to help the contestants. Landale, who byNanChalat - Circle the date July 14 on your calendar. It is already circled by some of the finest athletes in Park City as they step up training and finalize their strategies for the second annual Ride and Tie. "It is a beautiful course," says contestant Dana Landale Lan-dale of the thirty mile trail from Deer Valley to Midway. The course ranges in altitude from 6,200 feet to 9,000 feet and presents some stiff challenges for this year's contestants. ."The hard part I think, will be Snake Creek. It is all uphill for about five miles and we will already be tired," comments Landale whose teammate, Beverly Ross, won in her category last year. Head Veternarian Buzz Marden describes the course as "clear cut with no major obstacles, but with several long grades." The Ride and Tie is a combination of endurance x riding and marathon running V which was invented by Bud J Johns of Levi Strauss and Co, in 1971. Last year's race, the first Ride and Tie to be held in Park City, was If sponsored by Levi's but the race this year is being sponsored by local business- es?-and the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is expecting over 50 teams to. be competing for more than $500 in prize money. Aside from many local teams there will be contestants from Telluride, Big Bear Lake, Reno and San Francisco. Amanda Peterson, who just returned .from the National Levi Ride and Tie in Sun River, Oregon with Shirley Smith, said that some of those contestants will also be competing in Park City.
