The event was the Skyline Jeep Club's fourteenth annual "Snow Rally" and its purpose was to see who could maneuver their vehicle the furthest up the slippery, muddy hillside. For hours each day a steady stream of cars moved slowly up the Valley's narrow road creating traffic problems which were unsnarled only through the efforts of the local police. After numerous complaints of incredible traffic congestion and excessive drinking registered for the most part by Deer Valley residents, Chief Garth Wilkinson was on the verge, Saturday afternoon, of revoking the Club's permit and cancelling Sunday's event. However, Skyline Jeep Club officers managed to placate the property owners and the Park City Police Department agreed to provide traffic control and check cars for beer. Under the original agreement with the City the Jeep Club was supposed to provide these services but was unable to keep up with the large crowd. Despite efforts of local police officers, alcoholic beverages managed to be smuggled in. Spectators consumed hundreds of gallons of beer which local stores reported selling in record quani-ties. quani-ties. The police made 15 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol during the weekend and several minors were cited for drinking under age. Despite the huge crowds, most businessmen maintained they felt little economic econo-mic impact during the two day event except, of course, those who sell beer. . . - .-w ( ?r j.. r ?
