Show WM" Building Fate Hangs In Balance A public hearing within the next two weeks may determine the fate of the Memorial Building, which according to County Commissioner Dale Leavitt no longer should be supported with County funds. "It is my feeling that the County should not be supporting a facility that only is used by Park City residents," said Commissioner Commis-sioner Leavitt. When it was pointed out that the County supports a hospital which is used almost exclusively by Coalville, the Commissioner admitted that perhaps the hospital, hospi-tal, too, should be supported by the town that uses it. "My main reason for wanting Park City to take it over is because the County has failed to make sufficient use of it, while the city has a need for additional office space and things. There's been a lot of vandalism, and I feel that Park City could look after it better. "The County has applied for a grant of over $300,000 to fix up the Memorial Building, and if received, we would turn this money over to Park City for renovation," promised the Commissioner. Com-missioner. "The County also would be willing to help with the operation for two or three years, but eventually we would expect the city to take it over." At Park City's Council meeting on November 4, Mayor Uriarte said he did not believe the city could afford the $15,000 annual upkeep. Council member Steve Derring suggested that the County should contribute as much to Park City's Memorial Building as it does to Coalville's hospital. There was a request for suggestions from the public as to how the building might be used more efficiently. One suggestion is that it be turned into a convention center, as this would provide a source of income to offset the building's upkeep, while leaving it free at other times for public activities. The public is encouraged to make other recommendations to the Record, to the Mayor, to any Council member, or at the public hearing. The hearing has been set for November 23. |
