Only, this time, the daring young men and ladies were minus the trapeze. The means of flight were skis and a mountain moun-tain of snow. Park West Ski Resort hosted another freestyle competition this weekend, which was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive and Midas Muffler Co. for a purse of $12,500 for both men and women's events. Cash prizes priz-es were awarded for each events winner and for each of the overall winners in the competition. Colgate deserves a gold star for their promotion of women's sports. David R. Foster, president of Colgate, Col-gate, has described the Colgate Col-gate sponsored events as a continuing and unfoldingpro-gram unfoldingpro-gram of athletic competition involving girls and women, aimed at promoting the growth of women's sports in the United States. 'By helpingprovide equality equal-ity of opportunity as well as monetary reward for women wo-men in sports," says Mr. Foster, we hope we can create expanded interest and outlets for vast numbers of young women. We hope our program will be instrumental instrumen-tal in making a lasting impact im-pact upon the efforts of this toward establishing representative repres-entative teams of women in international - competition." Let's have a cheer for Colgate! Col-gate! This past weekend's event included moguls, a downhill run executed for creativity in taking moguls or bumps; aerial, a spectacular combination com-bination of mid-air maneuvers maneuv-ers and flips and, ballet, a display of skill comparable to that of figure skating. The grand championship is determined on the basis of total points earned in each category. The ballet was beautifully performed with Genia Fuller and Mark Steigemeier judged the best. The mogul smashers were just incredinle. 2ooming straight down a bump infested infest-ed pitch, bouncing away, touching down every now and again as to not defy gravity. The recoveries made were just mangificient. The skiers were seemingly on the brink of disaster at all times. A bump would sometimes be hit wrongly, a tumble would commence and without losing a beat, the competitor would ski out of it. Karen Huntoon and Jack Taylor were considered the smashing best. The aerials were something some-thing else again. Such precision pre-cision and grace of those beautiful floating bodies. The winners of the aerials were Suzy Chaffee and Robert Young. The overall winners of the air race were Genia Fuller and Scott Brooksbank. I think most every skier in the crowd had a slightly deflated ego after observing this past freestyle competition. t ; f.
