Show regation has been (and still is) an issue. I often think about that 30 foot burning cross on that Ohio hillside with the enshrouded en-shrouded figures clustered about it! Dili and Pieces By Eleanor Bennett Thinking of one particular bit of news in recent days I am indirectly reminded of another "venture" in our famous Model T Ford that I've mentioned before. be-fore. We were driving from New York to Michigan and had to make a detour we were in Ohio and had reservations for the night in a hotel in Sandusky. Daddy decided to go ahead and drive the detour after dark even though we wouldn't arrive on schedule. As I remember it was late summer and the detour was scarcely more than a lane a dirt road winding in and over and around. It was dark as pitch and we seemed to be the only car on the road for miles and miles. All of a sudden as we came up over the crest of a small hill, there, in stark and startling light was a huge burning burn-ing cross! This was a time when the Ku Klux Klan was very active and people would read about these crosses but never dream of ever seeing one! They were used as a warning to the community! com-munity! It certainly was an eerie sight-Daddy jammed on the brakes and we sat there in hushed hush-ed silence, just watching. As our eyes became accustomed to the bright light against the night, we could make out silent white-clad figures forming a circle around the cross. It took a lot of explaining by Mother and Daddy to make me even begin to understand what was going on-what it all meant. Never again have I seen a burning cross and I hope I never do.
