The sight of the longest night lit ski run in the Rockies is either bizarre or commonplace, cold or warm and friendly according to who you are and whether you see it from a tireless skier's viewpoint or from that of a pooped motorist's. motor-ist's. However, to many students and some nine to five workers, the run represents a reprise from the humdrum ot daytimo work or study and the chance of some quick runs before hitting the sack. The night lit run, of course, is Payday which was once called one of the ten finest ski runs in the United States by Sports Illustrated magazine. First opened for night use during the 67-68 ski season, it was serviced by the Resort's gondola with a ride to the angle station. The Resort has since added the 12 minute Payday chair, a chillier but equally efficient lift. For in the course of lighting Payday an average of about 26 nights a month, the Resort racks up amonthlybillof$570or so. That's equivalent to burning around 1,200 standard 100-watt bulbs for the same time. However, the light bulbs that brighten Payday are a little heftier, ranging in power from 500 to 1,000 watts in mercury mer-cury vapor or quartz iodide models. Night skiing started last Saturday and will last as long as conditions remain suitable. This year's night skiing schedule calls for skiing every evening of the week except Sundays with a lift ticket price of $5.50 for six and a half hours of skiing from 4 p.m. until 10:30 when the lifts close. Monday evenings, the Resort will feature a "Student's night" with tickets sold at half-price to students who can produce an activity card of student l.D. Tuesday nights will be 'Ladies Night" with all girls receiving a complimentary lift ticket when accompanied byafull-payingmaleescort. Ski lessons for those wishing to brush up their technique are available under two programs. The first is more or less an extension of the regular daytime program and is available for both privates and groups when arranged in advance during the day. The second night ski lesson program is specially designed for would-be skiers who can't get away during the day. Called the "Night Owl Program" it features a five week schedule of 1 12 hour group (One day on Thursday) from 7:30-9 p.m. Two sessions will to held, the first beginning January 4th and the second togmmng February 8. The co:;t of the program is $30 including lift passes. |
