Show Training Topic via Helicopter Rescue Yorli Members of the Summit County Sheriff's Patrol are receiving re-ceiving training in Search and Rescue with the aid of a helicopter, heli-copter, thanks to the Army Reserve. Re-serve. Thursday, October 12, Army reservists: Dean Christenson, Tom Larsen, Brent Phillips, Ralph Earl and Loran Bagely landed an eight-man copter on North Summit's football field. The eight-man helicopter is of the same type used in Viet Nam for rescue work. It can reach an altitude of 10,000 feet or better if weather conditions are just right. It cannot operate in bad snow storms, fog, severe wind or where visibility is severly restricted. Members of the helicopter crew are all veterans of duty in Viet Nam and they pointed out some of the "Do's" and Don'ts" of helicopter rescue. Warnings were given against a dry landing site, as the wind from the blades blows the dust so badly that visibility is reduced re-duced to zero. Loose objects were to be removed from the landing area and it was pointed out the copter should have level ground to sit down on. Objects such as clothing, blankets, etc. should not be left in the landing area as they can be sucked into the blades causing caus-ing heavy damage to the machine. mach-ine. A radio frequency check revealed re-vealed the helicopter was on the same frequency as the Sheriff Patrol radios and this would give tremendous assistance in rescue missions. Summit County Sheriff Ron Robinson and patrol members expressed thanks and appreciation apprecia-tion to the Army Reserve and the crewmembersforthe training. |
