such a big kick ou of the rougher sports Take boxing for in in- in stance They sit around clapping clapping clapping clap clap- ping shouting and whistling with glee when one of the fellows commences to get his brains scrambled or take the car raer racer gosh goshI They arent aren't any fun at all unless several cars turn turnover over on the turns and burn several of the drivers to death Of or course there are milder forms Yoa You slip on the ice during the winter fall down and about b break rea k your back back and and most everyone watching will give out with that nervous laugh I believe such reactions are due on everyone's part as an expression of relief because it isn't happening to them The victim is always the other fellow tand and if that personally makes you happy more happy more power to you HOW AND WHY The following is experiences of a man who had emphysema and how and why he quit smoking sm smoking king k- k ing After being home from the hospital a couple of weeks I got gotto gotto to asking myself What exactly do I have what caused it and what am I going to do about it About a year aR ago I felt an acute sho shortage t ge of breath if I walked too fast or worked too fast I would have to stop for a afew afew afew few moments and gasp for air air oh ohI thought I this is interfering interfering interfering ing too much with my life I had better go to a doctor I finally went to the family doctor and told him I was short of breath He gave a thorough examination and said It would help if you slowed down on smoking but really I cant can't find much wrong with you I left his office still gasping for air- air about a week later I received his bill That really had me panting for awhile Of course I kept right on smoking and in the back of my mind was always the thought I am going to quit those stinking weeds but tomorrow Ill I'll do it no use to hurry However I have always hated a pipe so thought Ill I'll quit the cigarettes and try a pipe for awhile and then it will be easy I will just throw the pipe away later SAME THING One day I rang a doorbell at a house in Salt Lake City We had been sent there to spray a ceiling I about decided no noone noone noone one was home when the door opened A man stood there with his eyes bulging his mouth agape leaning against the door jamb He didn't say a word one look at him and I knew he had the same thing I had only more so After a few minutes he made it across the room and sat down I asked him about his lungs and he said that he had been a head candy maker and chocolate dust and cigarettes had been his downfall He had had one lung removed and the theother theother theother other was half shot After that job we drove up toward the mountains and started started started start start- ed to work on another house During a short break I lit up my pipe As I did so I thought of the poor soul we had just left and I ripped that pipe from my mouth and threw it as far faras faras faras as I could That was the first time in forty years I actually quit smoking and it lasted nine weeks ALL BETTER I started better ate and slept better of better of course in inthe inthe inthe the back of my noggin was the thoughts of that wonderful aroma of tobacco tobacco old old habits are hard to break so naturally I started thinking Oh one wont won't hurt me then it was two then three three it it took me almost a week to git back that old rotten feeling feeling feel feel- ing knowing ing knowing what it was doing to me I kept at it How stupid can a fellow get I had to change a tire on my truck that should have taken me five minutes but I spent forty minutes on that small job It got so it was quite a chore just walking from the garage to the house Then another time I was going out of the house into one of those pouring down rainstorms rainstorms rainstorms rain rain- storms towards a dry truck and andI I got within three feet of the truck and ran out of steam and so soI I had to stand there for a few minutes getting soaked I just couldn't make the last couple of steps The first week of last Decem Decem December Dec- Dec em em ember emer Jar er the old flu fiu bug took a bite out of me You know how it is nothing tastes good and you want to sleep a lot What lot What a wonderful time to quit ing I slept on and off for two days and haven't smoked since not that I don dont don't t think about it but those thoughts only last a moment or two When WIlen I consider how I have purposely worked to wreck my health I could sure kick myself I have found it easy to quit smoking though I dont don't honestly believe that is the only cause of my emphysema there is all that smog dust paint odors gas fumes and a few other things to help it along BIG DOLLAR It seems that in this country making the mighty dollar is ismore ismore ismore more important than a fellows health Take the Legislature for instance the instance the first thing they pick on to tax are cigarettes hoping that more people will smoke enabling them to o make more money The cigarette manufacturers sent theIr t tobacco o b a c c o lobby td Washington to wine and dine the politicians knowing before ore hand their money will be well spent They arent aren't going to have to print on their packages Smoke these and die die- which may scare a few chumps they chumps they just say May be injurious to your health health- In a way this seems sort of silly me knocking tobacco especially when Im I'm in a couple of Mutual Funds that are now carrying shares of to tobacco tobacco tobacco to- to bacco stock but nuts to that If I can help someone to a better life in my rough sort of way Im I'm for it Now that I have told you all my troubles troubles-I I would like to tell you a few more reasons to give up the stinking weed You sleep better eat better keep good eye eyesight eyesight eyesight sight be less grouchy combat fatigue de develop a better memory memory mem mem- ory have clean breath drink less alcohol be less nervous save money and prevent fires That should be enough reasons to start on though there are many more PREVENT FIRES The last one prevent fires you have all read about the bed smokers who burn themselves themselves themselves them them- selves and everyone else up There was an old retired naval gunner who returned to the farm One winter night he sat satin satin satin in a rocker before his wood stove the door open and his feet in the oven The dog was in his lap He rocked read the paper and smoked He was soon asleep his cigarette dropped on the paper and caught fire Just then his wife wile entered the room and yelled FIRE He jumped the dog in the oven slammed d the door came to attention attention attention at- at saluted and said No 1 I Ion on its way Sir Sirl Sirl- Being an expert on how to quit I will give you the lowdown so burn your house down These are ways I have tried over the years that hasn't worked worked worked work work- ed for me Maybe you will have better luck I I. I You buy a pack of cigarettes tes open the pack while you are driving along light on up taRe a puff or two throw it and the rest of the pack out of the win win- dow The biggest draw back backon on this system system system-is is by the time you go back and get them they have been run over by another car or a big rain storm has passed over and smoking them themis is like trying to light up a soggy corn flake At the present present pre pre- sent time I have eleven packs scattered all about Salt Lake Valley 2 Dont Don't buy any but continue to chisel them from your friends Your friends will of course gradually cross to the other side of the Ule street when they see you coming but you will have slowed down on your smoking so this system has a little merit if you care to remain friend friend- less HOW AND WHY 3 Throw all your cigarettes away go around and tell all your friends how and why you have seen the Ii Ugh light gh t and will never smoke again The next mornin buy a pack light up and your friends will find out what a big liar you really are 4 Buy a pack before leaving the house in the morning take four out and leave the rest home Do the same for a couple more days and then lower that to three and then two The only trouble with that system you will get tired of counting and get back to smoking more than ever 5 In the morning say to your yourself self I cant can't have one now but butI I can have one in an hour When that hour arrives repeat that saying If you dont don't get tired of looking at your watch you may make it till noon 6 Have guts Brigham Young was supposed to have said to Jim Bridger I 1 take this plug of tobacco out of my pocket and say to it are you stronger than me or am I stronger than you you you- Then he would put the plug back into his pocket The trouble with that system while gazing at the plug you would probably give in and take a bite out of it before returning returning returning return return- ing it to your pocket and then again if your wife heard you talking to a Iou lousy s y plug of tobacco she would call the guys with the white coats and you would be put away Well that is six ways to try and quit now here is the way I Imade Imade Imade made it this time I got so disgusted with my lack of usefulness usefulness usefulness use use- I just quit cold I found cutting down on coffee helped some as coffee seemed to trigger off something inside me that said have a smoke Fruit juices were quite help help- ful Lots of people have told me to eat lots of candy in place of it but who wants sugar dia dia- dia- dia betes It seems that man has always wanted something to put into his mouth to take the place of the pacifier his mother took away from him as a baby So maybe that's the true answer go buy yourself a pacifier Therma Turner |
