living in Tacoma Washing Washing- ton She sent a News Tribune clipping of an article written by Jack Pyle during the Western Governors' Governors Conference Here itis it itis itis is Park City Utah-This Utah is a strange place to hold a Western Governors' Governors Conference It is an anold anold anold old mining town that was all but buta a ghost town five years ago when somebody f found o u n d out it would make a good ski resort Then once the facilities were in it was decided to restore the historical features of a mining town and use it for year-round year recreation Park City is almost at the foot elevation Some snow is not far away The air is thin and it takes a couple of days to get gets accustomed to it The governors start their sessions at am a.m. and wind windup windup windup up about 2 o'clock which gives them plenty of time for recreational recreational recreational activities which in include include include in- in clude playing golf and going horseback riding in the rain- rain it has rained every day since they got here Otherwise they can figure if they have enough time to go into Salt Lake City Even the elbow bending elbow set is frustrated Nobody can figure out the Utah liquor laws which require you to take your own bottle to the bars which can sell only water and soda pop at prices you'd pay in Tacoma for a regular drink The liquor stores are closed on Sundays but some bars are open The bars are closed on M Mondays but the liquor stores are open Most of the residents dont don't care much because they are Mormons who dont don't even drink tea or coffee Salt Lake City where the tourist attractions are is 30 winding miles away away- about an hours hour's drive each way Si Since ce there is nothing big or fancy enough in Park City to hold the big Wednesday night tie black state dinner everyone everyone everyone every every- one will be driven to the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City where the conference its itself elf should have been held then back to Park City to sleep Integration is not the word at this conference Everything possible has been done to segregate segregate segregate seg seg- regate the governors from the people Except for the sessions there was only one reception at which the governors and the rest of the convention rubbed elbows That was a Monday night gondola ride to the top of Treasure Mountain COLD RECEPTION It was so cold up there that the chattering teeth drowned out the clinking of the ice in inthe inthe inthe the glasses which nobody really wanted very the badly-the ice that is They even set a separate reception at the state dinner The segregation was so bad some of the governors governors particularly those running for re reelection reelection reelection re- re election this year-have year lodged official complaints about the lack of communication with the press They even stand around after the sessions hoping someone some some- one other than their wives will come up and talk with them When reporters made room reservations they were were told the governors would be housed two blocks away They weren't told that each block was a mile long really but the convention hall was two blocks up away hill Washington's new s men as were many others were quartered quartered quartered in the Bon Motel an unlikely place which despite its French name has a Chinese restaurant in the the lobby lobby no no space is wasted here The rooms are 1 large a r g ge e and good and inexpensive From the front the view is of a playground playground playground play play- ground and the older houses in town In the back the view diminishes somewhat You open your drapes and there is the side of a mountain three feet away since the motel was built on a mountain Much of the conference has concerned itself with pollution which prompted Gov Jack Williams Williams Williams Wil Wil- liams of Arizona to comment The stories about air pollution are so bad that the older people are afraid to go to work in the morning and were we're hearing so much about the side effects of the pill the younger people are afraid to go to bed at night He got considerable local coverage on that FAST WORKER Despite the had to throw the whole unit out and start over and I so advised the motel maintenance man Does it keep you awake at night he asked No No I replied triumphantly Because I have finally adjusted it to such a fine point that I Ican Ican Ican can flip the float higher with my finger and it will shut off oft Then I guess its it's all right he said But the maid keeps putting the lid back on the top of the tank tank I told him Ill tell her to leave it on the floor he promised The headline the Tacoma paper used was Pyle is Puffing Puffing Puffing fing Governors Newsmen Find Park City Thing of the Past sider myself an authority on Park City but I feel that I am more qualified than he to judge Mr Pyle states that Most of the residents dont don't care about the liquor laws because they are Mormons and dont don't even drink tea or coffee He has been listening to as it is the townspeople who patronize the saloons year round and keep them running Al Also o Park City has just as many other religious denominations as Mormons As far as the liquor laws are concerned I have never had to pay the price of a drink for a up set-up there yet unless the price included the entertainment entertainment entertainment entertain entertain- ment cost Mr Pyle failed to mention anything about that Entertainment was wasn't n t even mentioned except that the stripper stripper stripper strip strip- per there isn't as good as one might find in Las Vegas Js Also it is cheaper in the long longrun run to buy your own bottle than to pay the price of separate drinks Might I also point out that Washington had hada a similar law up until the there are other states with this law still in effect I really doubt that the State Dinner Dinner- was held in Salt Lake City for the specific reason There is nothing big or fanc fancy enough in Park City This is the statement that makes me feel that Mr Pyle considers himself too good for anything except rubbing elbows with governors governors' gover gover- nors nors' nors As far as the weather is concerned concerned concerned con con- I think the only thing that might change is a little elbow rubbing with someone else The weather isn't anything anything anything any any- thing to rely on anywhere this time of year Anyway Park City is a typical Smalltown USA USA clean fresh mountain a air i r an ideal place for a conference on air pollution away from the rat- rat race of the city an atmosphere that some people can appreciate The Park R Record e c cor o r d invites others to make comment on the remarks made missed as of June 30 A discussion followed and when the motion was put to a vote it carried by a majority vote of two to one Mr Boyle and Mr Burns voted yes Mr Durante voted no Councilman Boyle reported the road work must line from eighth street to the Kimball residence and replace with new pipe He felt this would be less costly to the city than the city crew trying to do it along with all the other work that is pend
