H Barber six years have gone by I THOUGHT coming back to America would be a revelation to me once again But as I said it seemed natural to be back My American family are exactly as I remember them except a marriage three births one and a change of address During my two weeks here Ive I've hardly had time to draw my breath let alone evaluate and unravel my ideas AMONGST the jumble of or my impressions are new roads and houses popping up everywhere the monotony of commercials on TV and radio scattered drinking fountains the gigantic helpings restaurants serve the lack of little individual shops such as we have in Europe the excellent service one gets at garages the garages the windscreen is automatically cleaned a thing almost unknown unknown unknown un un- un- un known in England Music everywhere stores cafes even in the plane taking off from New York the sight of so many women going around with their hair in curlers I know life liCe is hectic over here I know time is precious but butI I still think appearance in public with hair pinned up is a cardinal sin IM I'M SORRY I cant can't give a amore amore amore more lucid concise description of my feel feelings but America is rather like taking a walk on a high mountain You get breathless breathless breathless breath breath- less and your head spins Not until you reach ground level can you arrange your thoughts Perhaps in London Ill I'll be less breathless and able to consider consider con con- sider and digest what I have seen I do know though it was wonderful wonderful wonderful won won- to come back again and receive the same overwhelming hospitality as I did before |
